If you can't get online on either machine, plug your ethernet cable directly from your cable or dsl modem into your desktop. If it shows a network connection and you still can't get online, it may be a service provider problem. I am assuming that your service provider did not ship you a router, only a modem. Hooking up 2 routers on the same connection can be very tricky.
Did you setup any type of security on the router? If so, did you enter the password for this into your laptop?
Since you say there is a strong connection to the router, have you tried accessing the router from your laptop by typing its IP address into your web browser address line?
I understand you can't get online with your laptop, but if you open your internet browser on the laptop and type the address of your router, 192.168.10.1, it will connect to the router's firmware. Here you can check out your connection issues.
If you can't type in the router IP address and connect to the router, then either you are not connected to it or you have some type of virus that has corrupted your winsock2 file. This is the type of problem that requires a step by step conversation or examination by a technician.
