Do a manual defrost, the auto switch short circuits sometimes, and therefore if manual defrosting works then you got to replace the auto-defrost circuitry. Also check if the thermostat is all right, otherwise that need a change too.....................................sodeep

What if the refrigerator side is not getting cold and the freezer side has a lot of lce on back but does not get that cold eather

Completely defrost your freezer and then plug it back in. A lot of fridges get there cold air from a vent connected to the freezer unit and that could now be blocked by ice. Your cooling coils also won't work correctly once they are covered in ice. So completely defrosting it and letting is sit open for a day or so to get the ice completely melted out of the vent and cooling coils should fix the both problems.

Hello there,
When your refrigerator begins to have ice at the back, it is known as ice build up. There is no leakage anywhere, it is just that there is a component or the other that is being faulty inside the unit of the refrigerator. The defrost unit is where the problem is from.
The defrost process is done automatically and the process involves the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and the defrost timer. Once one of them or more becomes faulty, ice will begin to form at the back of the refrigerator.
You will have to test the defrost timer, defrost heater and defrost thermostat in order for you to be able to tell which is faulty and need to be replaced.
You can go through these tips if you intend to fix this yourself. Defrost thermostat http://www.fixya.com/support/r10513592-test_defrost_thermostat http://www.fixya.com/support/r10513650-replace_defrost_thermostat defrost heater http://www.fixya.com/support/r10523771-test_defrost_heater http://www.fixya.com/support/r10523754-replace_defrost_heater defrost timer http://www.fixya.com/support/r10523722-test_defrost_timer http://www.fixya.com/support/r10523742-replace_defrost_timer

Freezer is building up ice in the back which is blocking the vents. I have cleared the ice and tried to open the vents but 2 hours later its the same and the motor keeps running

If its again building up ice, that means the unit is not defrosting. Its starting the cooling procedure, then while defrosting, its not working. The defrost assembly consists of three main parts. The defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and defrost board.Any of the one is not functioning. When thermostat sense the maximum cooling, it triggers the defrost heater to start heating and this defrosts the ice collected on the coils and the system works. Both thermostat and heater are controlled by defrost board.First the thermostat and defrost heater to be checked, if both check ok by meter and visually, then its defrost board causing the problem. You can get required parts from from online sites like:--- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. ----------- Before that you can try manual defrost reset procedure. The manual defrost reset procedure is as follows : ---- First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. If the same problem occurs then it's defrost problem. ------------------ This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice on it. If not. you have other issues
Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer
3. Defective defrost sensor

your refrig side will be warm or ice at the vent..

You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

Since I tried to help you, Please help me and Rate/Vote on the response. Thanks

do a total, 24hour,defrost,with the doors open,(loads of towels)this should melt all the ice you cant see/get at.DO NOT use hairdryers/scrappers as they only do the surface ice.Wash out/spray all vents/drains with clorine bleach.(clorine is a gas and the smell will not permeate food if left to vent naturally) then switch onto fast freeze, check door seals are tight all round(hot cloth will help mould them).hope all works well for you/please leave feedback.ta!

Bottom frezzer is working but fridge is not blowing cold air

Refrigerator gets cold air from freezer compartment. Either the air flow is blocked by food items or ice, or the recirculating fan is not working.

The most common failure is that the freezer coils get all iced up becuase the defroster timer, defroster thermostat, or heater has stopped working.

When it's running, you should feel cold air blowing out of the vents that are in the fridge, otherwise, the 'air tower' (air vent) is blocked with ice.

If you manually defrost the whole thing, and it runs fine for a day or so, then it's not defrosting properly. If you manually turn the defroster timer, and you don't hear the scorching/hissing/gurgling of the defroster working, then that would confirm a fault in the defroster circuits.

Based on the following thread, it's probably a bad defrost thermostat.

Freezer isnt freezing yet ice is forming on the back wall

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezerare icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation ofcold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. Inmost newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicksand everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replacethe timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn thetimer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Frozen vents from freezer to fridge

you most likely have a defrost problem.or a clogged drain.you need to check your defrost heater defrost timer and thermostat.if ice is formed over drain then you can unclog drain with hot water.you will see when it is unclogged, water will run down drain without running over into bottom of freezer.
