Question about Zenith Z50PX2D 50 in. Plasma HDTV

Loud Pop and no more picture-Z50PX2D

I almost cannot believe how much the same my case is to many others. I purchased a Zenith Z50PX2D in March 2006 from CC plus a 3 yr extented, totaling just north of $3000. On July 26, 2009 we had the loud pop and no more picture. I have been very impressed with the information sharing on the web and equally disappointed with LG and their continued denial of a problem. I called LG Customer Service and got the sme story as most others - "out of warranty, not our problem, but we can help you locate a repair shop". When I complained about the copious documentation of the problem on sites like this one I was told that the information on the web cannot be authenticated and LG has not determined this to be a recurring problem. For now I have ordered a replacement Y-sus board (circa $200 with core charge and shipping) and I am hoping to be able to fix it myself.
If any recourse develops (e.g. a class-action suit) I will strongly consider participating, even though I believe that our legal system should not have to be burdened with resolving consumer issues like this. The manufacturer needs to step up and be acocutable.

One hour ago, Zenith z50px2d gave out a loud POP. Actually, more of a CRACK, like a stone hitting your windshield - startled the heck out of me. . (Was watching SyFy movie - space ship going through a meteor shower - my wife thought it was part of the show) at first, just dark picture, now its nearly dead: when i press power, the green power light flashes four times and turns red, off. Tried unplugging, same thing. I don't have a solution right now, just wanted to add to the body of evidence. I do have the equipment at home and will be taking it apart and share any insights I get. Im hoping you had a spike and blew a fuse. If you feel comfortable checking for a fuse problem check that other wise you might have blown a voltage regulator or a transistor

My zenith plasma tv popped real loudlike a car backfiring and then the tv picture went black. power on green light wil turn on but it automatically cuts itself back off to the red light

There's an over current fault in the power supply or the Y-sustain convergence board. The loud pop was either a capacitor or pico-fuse breaking from excessive current overload. Sounds like 2 or 3 mosfets have shorted at the gate ends. Plasma TV's always have this problem because they generate too much heat and the components cant take the load conditions. Make your next TV an LCD...

To fix this problem have your local repair shop do it for you.....

any questions please ask.....

Heard a loud pop and picture went bad, very bad.

Loud pop is usually (99%) a capacitor. More than likely on the power supply. Needs to be serviced.

50'' zenith popped has lots of white

Apparently these boards eat each other when you get the loud "Pop", then shutdown, so I had to change the Y sus, Zsus and both Y driver boards at the same time, to repair. Keep that in mind.

My Z50PX2D was just over 2 years old and well out of warranty when the “Pop/Blank Screen” problem struck. However, LG took great care for the situation.
I civilly called LG's customer service (very nice people… all of them). LG’s CS phone number is (877) 543-8325. After a few short phone calls (less than 5 minutes each) over 4 day period, they extended my warranty and it is currently being serviced ($0 out of my pocket).
Here are some tips on the working with LG on the “Pop” issue (this should reduce the number of phone calls needed):
- RULE #1… Be respectful to all of them, everyone I spoke to were extremely nice.
- Have the model number, serial number, date of purchase and original receipt (they will require it faxed) on hand.
- Call LG Customer Service (877) 543-8325
- They will ask how they can help: Tell them what happened to your TV and you want to see if they can extend your TV’s warranty for the “pop” problem.
- They will setup a case:
o Will ask for your information (name, address, phone, model, serial number, date of purchase)
o Will ask what the problem was (IE: watching TV, there was a loud pop from the TV and the screen went out). No need elaborate too much, they know this problem exists.
o Will ask for you to fax the receipt to their fax number (they will provide)
§ Note the case number, your name and phone number on the receipt before faxing.
- Before hanging up, ask them for the case number. This will make it easier for everyone when you call back.
- Give them about 24 hours before calling to verify they received the fax.
o If they have received the fax and applied the notes to the case, they should be able to let you know if they will extend the warranty on that call.
o If the fax was received but not yet added to the ‘Case’, give them one more day.
Hopefully you will have success in having your warranty extended.

Loud pop - no picture

Your X and Y circuit boards are bad. It might require the replacement of the power supply as well. This is not uncommon for LG/Zenith plasmas to have this issue. Not a do it yourself repair.
