Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I've just reloctaed my Kelvinator Techno-frost fridge freezer from my garage to my kitchen. The freezer seems to be working ok but the fridge is taking some time to cool down. There's a dial on the front numbered 1 - 5 is 1 the coolest or 5? (sorry I inherited this fridge with the house so no user manual)

I believe 5 would be the coolest. On most of your systems the higher number indicates a lower temperature.

first look for an air vent in the bottom of the fridge(a small grill on the inside wall) & make sure nothing is blocking it, like bread eg: if there isn't then unplug your fridge & let it defrost, check the drain outlet in the back of the freezer, sometimes a small item like a frozen pea gets into the drain & the water freezes around it causing the air not to return to the freezer from the fridge, to push air into the fridge you must be able to get air out or it presurises,

I want to buy a Kelvinator fridge freezer off trade me. The seller has stated that the fridge tends to ice up. I'm wondering if there is an easy fix for this problem and if not, how much would it be...

Any problems of this sort can also become a major fault specially if the INVESTMENT COST IS HIGH. So before you make your choice it is best to buy a perfectly working set than to get one and end up spending a great deal, not forgetting the time.

The fault seems to be the auto defroster but it can vary.If there is no cooling at all on the fridge section but the freezer works then it is confirmed that the compressor and gas pressure is OK. Now shut off the fridge and leave it powered off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if ice forms in the freezer then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked. Frost formation without defrosting could block the air flow and so shut the air passage to the fridge. Also the blower fan must work and if this is not working then the fan can be faulty. Also a fault on the control unit is a suspect to non functioning of any one of these components.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test using a multi-meter on the defrost timer and the thermostat and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Kelvinator fridge freezer, fridge too cold frosting at back

Fridges that are less then 10 years old have a lot of POWER. To get rid of the frost, wait until you have eaten most of the food up (maybe a few days), then unplug the fridge and leave the doors open. This will take care of the frost after several hours.

From then on, make sure that when your fridge is full, use a higher setting, and when it is near empty or half way full, use a lower setting. Keeping the freezer at a mid to low setting all the time should be fine, because its usually the fridge part that gives people trouble. You will have to judge on your own which setting is best (i.e you can tell when its good based on how cold the juice is in there, etc).

By adjusting the setting based on the amount of food in your fridge, it should prevent frosting.

Hope that helps!

I have a Kelvinator Opal Fridge/Freezer. The freezer is working fine but the food compartment wont cool. It used to run too cool and freeze stuff on the top shelf. The fridge seals are fine, the fan runs...

The vent from the freezer to the fridge can be blocked with frost and is preventing the flow of cool air to the fridge.
This can happen if there is frost build up due to failure of the auto defrost timer.
So please check on the fan section , remove panel and see if there is frost or block, if so check the timer Heater and the thermostat.

Freezer is working ok, fridge is warm, a couple of days now. Kelvinator N476c, approx 10yrs old. Some water is leaking in fridge and has previously leaked on the floor at different times, not consistently....

Hi

Check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the freezer or evaporator fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils under the unit for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan to see if it is running.
If you have frost in the freezer there is a problem with the defrost system and the freezer will start to warm eventually as well as the fresh food section. If that is the problem you can check the defrost terminator, defrost heater/s, and the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control If used on your unit or the main control board if so equipped. These things usually require dismantling the freezer and other areas of the refrigerator to be checked.
You could defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with the doors open to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

I bought a Kelvinator fridge in July which seems to run constantly, it has now been relegated to the garage, whats the problem? It is model No KTM 4200WB

Most refrigerators have about a 70% duty cycle, depending on ambient room temperature, content, etc. If your unit is indeed running all the time as you state, it may be low on refrigerant, have an inefficient compressor, or an air flow issue. Make sure there is no frost buildup in the freezer, the fans are running, door seals are good. If all above looks good and the temps are ok, you may just be catching it on a cycle on time and not noticing it cycling on and off, especially it being in the garage. If the temps are questionable, my money is on low refrigerant level.
