Indeed eignt blinks is a power problem, but this does not mean that the battery or the power adapter are faulty.
Eight blinks on HPs is fault code. Itmeans that there is power getting to the computer , but that the voltage out from the DC to DC power converter has an incorrect value.
Naturally this can be caused also by a faulty power adapter , or by a shorted battery, but this is quite unusual.
When you have this condition, you usually need to replace either the motherboard or the power converter board when this is separate.
Before replacing DC power converter, remove battery and unplug the laaptop, leaving it unplugged for twenty or thirty minutes. Connect AC adapter back and test the laptop with no battery.
That will tell you if the battery may have caused the problem.
To test the DC adapter, read Volts on DC adapter out. This can be done using a multimeter. Volts must be within +/_ 0.5 Volts from the value on specs.
You may find out that the AC adapter and the battery are fine, and computer is still in same fault condition.
In that case the laptop must be taken apart to replace the faulty DC converter.
The part can be ordered from HP.

This is not a good sign. The error code is saying there is a problem with the system board or bios. Basically they will need replacement.
I don't know if this will work but try it and hope it does. Go to this web page and follow what it tell you to do. It might reset it enough to get it running.

I don't think you will get it working from the error code so before you take it back to the store or send it off to HP have a local shop pull the hard drive and back up your information. While most repair depots do try not to wipe the drive sometime they do need to and they don't do backups so all of your data is gone.
Wish I had an easy fix for you.

Thanks, I tried taking the battery out and reconnecting. In this case it is completely dead. When I put the battery back, I get the 8 blinks again. I cannot test the DC convertor as I need to get a multimeter. BTW I am based in Switzerland with 220V power supply. The notebook power supply is set up for that. It is possible I may have had a short when plugging into the mains socket here. Switzerland has small 3-pin plugs and I noticed a pop when I plugged in, although it worked normally afterwards. After powering down it would not come back up. Would this be the probable cause?
