Husquavana Rose sewing machine keeps stopping. Stitch is good, threads move with appropriate tension. But a spool of thread symbol keeps showing up and blinking just as the machine stops. How do I fix

Set top tension at four. If the ball of thread remains on bottom then loosen the bobbin tension. Do this a little at a time until the stitch is good.

Do you mean the symbol above the scissors on the infodisplay? If that is the blinking indicator, then the top thread has broken or the spool is empty. If the top thread continues to break, then the problem could be the age of the thread or the thread catching on a spot on the spool. (Thread degrades under most light. So the time it was on display at the store or sitting in your sewing area can be a factor.) Check the spool for rough spots. Make sure that the top thread is threaded correctly. Try a new needle; sometimes the eye of the needle can have sharp burs or edges. Check the top thread tension. Look at the hole in the stitch plate; if it is chipped or damaged, replace it. A damaged stitch plate can also cause breakage of the bobbin thread.

needle thread tension not tight enough to pull bobbin thread up into the material

Loopy on bottom means the top tensions need to be adjusted. "All on 3 means nothing" These are tension knobs and are not required to be on the same number.

In the mean time rethread the machine with a different color on each spool This will help you determine which thread is the offender. sew the same type of material this thread set up... tighten the corresponding tension dial. Once you get a good stitch, Lift the food, cut all the threads near the spools and tie off new thread/spools and pull the thread through to the needle. Once it is all threaded again test your stitch with the same fabric again.

Set the tension on the sewing machine for the weight of the material you want to sew. The tension setting shows in the stitch on the material. Use the chart on the machine that matches types of stitches with suggested material tensions. An example of this is, the stitch to sew jean material is different than the stitch to sew silk.

Take the bobbin and wind the thread around it. Make sure the bobbin is empty and don't fill it too full of thread. A bobbin filled too full won't stay tightly spun.

Thread the string evenly on the bobbin. Move the thread back and forth evenly and in layers that are level. Many Singer sewing machines have a bobbin winder on the top of the sewing machine, and the consistency of how it threads can save you frustration later.

Find the hole on the bobbin that is located near the inside spindle of the bobbin. Take the thread sitting on the sewing machines spool and insert the thread in the hole from inside the bobbin to the outside. Set the threaded bobbin on the spool designated for spinning on the top of the sewing machine for some Singers.

Turn the side drive wheel slowly until the threaded bobbin has a layer or two of thread on it. Push down on the drive peddle and fill the bobbin, but don't thread it to the very edge. If the bobbin is too full the thread will release erratically. Cut the thread from the spool.

Drop the bobbin into the bobbin case under the area where the needle sews the material. Close the case and turn by hand the side wheel drive until the bobbin threads into the sewing machine. You can tell when the bobbin is threaded by the tiny piece of thread that juts out of the bobbin case where the needle goes up and down.

Grab the thread with your fingers and pull it out approximately 4 inches. Your bobbin is now spun and threaded.

You haven't said what mail and model machine this relates to.

You could try http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineindex/tp/operatingasewingmachine.htm, there is lots of good general information there which might be of help, most machines have similar functionality, ie a bobbbin goes into a rotary hook and there will be a tension spring on that thread. Top thread will also need to go through tension device, usually discs in the threading path from spool to needle.

There is usually a stitch length and stitch width dial/knob/digital selection and a stitch selector for different utility stitches such as blind hem, overcasting etc. If you just want a straight stitch, then stitch length would be 2.5 or 2.7 maybe for a heavy fabric.

Important thing is threading up so that both threads are under tension, make sure the pressure foot is raised during threading so the top thread can go between the tension discs. The bobbin will either be drop in top loading in which case you need to click the thread into a tension spring on the side of the bobbin holder. Or front loading bobbin inside a removeable bobbin case which is mounted vertically. The bobbin case will also have a tension spring on it.

Also you could try You-tube - there is lots of videos there for different brands.

If your machine has been stored for 5 years, you should give it a good clean and oil according to the manual before you do anything else. Then put in a new needle and wind a fresh bobbin, checking that the bobbin has been wound smoothly as a badly wound bobbin can cause poor tension and stitching from the bottom thread.

You want the thread to go from the spool through a tension disc or eyelet to the bobbin and keep some gentle tension onto the thread spool using your scissors handle or similar so that the thread winds off it smoothly and the spool doesn't bounce around. Also give the thread a nudge with your finger tip as it winds onto the bobbin so it fills evenly, top, middle and bottom, not all in the middle.

Are you wanting a straight stitch to sew around the hemline? If so, your stitch length is right, but stitch width should be zero. You don't say what knob is set to 4, if its your top tension then that should be close, usually between 4 and 6 if dial goes from zero to 10.

Which thread is too tight? top or bottom. Firstly check the threading path to ensure that the top thread isn't catching on anything, is through the take up lever properly and coming from the thread spool without catching there. Some thread spools have a little knick in the top where you can catch the thread to store it, but you dont' want the thread to catch here when seaming, so turn it around the other way on the spool so it can't.

Try test stitching a medium zig zag stitch on scrap fabric, and you'll be able to see if the bottom thread is pulling in or the top one, then adjust the tension dial a little to lessen this.

Hope these pointers help, if you can't get a good neat stitch after trying these things, then consider taking it for a clean and service, the technician can get inside and clean the machine thoroughly and also check for any other issues that might be there.

Most likely the upper tension dial is too high. Turn it to 4 and try pulling the thread through the needle and see if it moves easier than before. If not turn it to 3. This should be a good tension on your upper thread so it won't make the stitch so tight. Also, be sure that the thread spool holder isn't too tight against your spool of thread. Let me know if this works.

If it was sewing correctly BEFORE the needle break...why did the needle break in the first place?...and what fixes did you make?
If it sewed properly...what changed?

Cut your upper thread close to the spool...make sure the presser foot is raised and pull the cut off thread section through/out of the machine from the needle area (sewing direction...do not pull the thread backwards!)

Clean out the bobbin area...remove any traces of lint or pieces of thread...look for any broken off needle pieces... brush the bobbin area out....then add a drop of sewing machine oil (but only if your manual says to oil that area).

Remove the needle plate to expose the feed dogs...brush/clean out that area too and add a drop of sewing machine oil...then secure the needle plate back on.
Replace the needle...do it again...yup...some needles arrive bad from the factory. Make sure the needle is inserted and positioned properly. Then thread the machine WITH the presser foot in raised position. (The thread needs to get seated into the upper tensions.)
..with the.presser foot down...thread the new needle.
Oh...and use the correct needle for the thread. (a universal 80/12 is standard).
Thread can cause issues too. Try a different bobbin, or maybe a different spool of thread to see if that makes a difference.
