I tried this and the external image looks normal, but I have one other issue.

When booting a warning pop up comes on telling me "the ATI Control Panel failed to start because no ATI driver is installed or ATI driver is not working properly"

This happened on my last laptop mobo when the ATI 9700 chip burnt out or didn't work. I would only be able to use VGA mode instead of the full resolution.

I wish I had another mobo and screen to test out.

From reading info on the laptop I found there is another intel chip that stores USB info and external/internal vga settings.

To determine if the LCD is faulty or the video card, connect an external monitor to the video port on the laptop, power up the external monitor first then the laptop. The video data will divert to the external monitor automatically and if you get a normal Windows image the the video card is OK and the fault is the LCD screen or video cable.

My acer asipre 4739z laptop starting after a few minutes not work. fan is running battery is ok

Please describe a list of events that takes place from the time the ON button is pressed until the screen goes OFF. Attach an external monitor and press the Function key with the screen key to transfer video. If monitor responds the video is OK but screen is BAD. Then replace Screen. If Monitor does not show video then problem is probably a thermo problem. To correct video chip overheating do the following; First ... Remove Battery. Remove CPU and Video Heatsink and Fan. Clean dust and lint that is blocking airflow in heat transfer grill. Clean dust from inside fan. Clean old heatsink grease from Heatsink and from Video chip and CPU. Apply fresh High Quality Heatsink grease evenly but sparingly to chips. Replace Heatsink following tightening order to spring screws at CPU. Replace covers ... and start.

Have you tried connecting to a External Monitor? Does the problem show on the External Monitor? Has the Computer been overheating? Any damage? It may be the Graphics Adapter? Has the Laptop been cleaned? Fan, vents, heatsink? Have you tried booting to Safe Mode? Any Change? Have you done ANY software updates?

W2Jb: No video on LCD; corrupted video on external monitor

Ahh, thanks for the clarification. This shounds like the video card has gone bad on the laptop. I believe this becasue you dont get any video at all through the laptop screen but you do on the CRT, indicating that it's not just a bad cable.

If it's an integrated video card (and it probably is) it would be more cost effective to buy a new laptop.

Hp 6720s lap top running - vista does not load

If the laptop runs extremely hot, then CPU will shut down (thermal overload) and will not boot up again until it has cooled down.
Overheating problems is caused by faulty fan (stop spinning) or the fan and heatsink assembly is clogged with dust. Check the fan, it should spin freely and remove and vacuum the dust from the fan and heatsink.
Replace the fan if it is faulty.

Hello, I have a vgn-s170 laptop that I just installed a new screen and motherboard. the video chip heatsink/fan is not running and the screen does not come on. what can i do

Have you tried connecting it to an external monitor? Are you sure the heatsink fan is not defective? If the screen works on an external monitor you know the video card is good. As long as the cable is plugged into the motherboard to provide power for the heatsink then it's either a bad heatsink fan or the motherboard connector for the heatsink is bad. My money is on the heatsink fan if you can get video from an external monitor.

This is very possibly a hardware problem, namely a crack in the motherboard. Sorry, no easy or cheap fix for it if that's the case.

IBM Laptop A31 2652 Garbled video even at initial boot screen

Connect an external monitor to the laptop, power up the monitor first and then bootup the laptop. The Windows image will automatically divert to the external monitor.
If the images is OK then the video card is OK.
From the description of the fault, it indicates that the fault could be a faulty video cable or video connector. Try reseating the video cable/connector on the motherboard.
Get back to me if you still have problems together with any error messages etc.

BSoD, Garbled Screen, Boot Failure.

If you are getting garbage on the screen before windows tries to load the laptop probably has a bad motherboard.

It's possibly only the video output is going bad on it, try hooking it to an external monitor and see if you get the same weird stuff on that screen.

Good luck, let me know how it goes
