Question about Kicker Solo-Baric L5 Car Subwoofer

Bad sound while playing at low volume, tested both voice coils and they are both are around 4 ohm.

Do you have it wired down to 0 ohm or 2ohm if u have a mono block amp wire it to where a pos. from one side goes to a neg on the other side and then use a pos an neg from diff sides coming from amp

There are a couple of reasons why this might have happened. Subwoofers are finicky. I always recommend to my clients that you don't apply full power to your sub until you have had one week of playing it at low volume. This helps to condition the voice coil. When at full power the voice coils heat up rapidly. To go from cold to heat fast will warp the coil. The bad news is that this would fall under the "abuse" category for refunds. Then again, you might get lucky with a return unless you bought it from an individual. The other thing might be how it was wired. If your amp is 4 ohm stable and you wired to a 2 ohm load, it may have shorted something. But you would think that would be the amp. Not sure this answered the question, but just a few ideas to think about.

off the same amp? you have two way different sounding speakers man. you can buy 2 identical speakers from the same company and brand and series and they will play differently every time. you have 2 speakers with nothing in common so you will hear a difference and maybe interference because of the different ohm levels.

I cant sem to wire it to 4 ohms because the terminals are right next to each other and i have no clue which 1 is which voice coil?


test with a digital multimeter set to ohms. if you don't have one of those laying around grab a 9 volt battery and run wires from the 2 terminals on the battery to 2 of the terminals on the woofer. if the woofer pops out you are said to be "in phase" (even though it has more to do with polarity that phasing but regardless) which means the positive from the battery is on the positive of the woofer and the negative is to the negative. those 2 terminals on the woofer are a single coil and obviously the other 2 terminals are the 2nd coil. now depending on what impedance each coil is will determine how you have to wire it to be 4 ohms unless they are 4 ohm coils which means you just use one coil and it will be 4 ohms on that woofer.

Replacing sub speaker


I wouldn't try reinventing it by replacing the driver. Drivers and their enclosures are designed to work together. And this being a self-amplified subwoofer, there is one more piece that's electrically optimized to the rest. Don't mess with it.

Why don't you just set your receiver's individual relative speaker volume levels so the sub isn't weak by comparison to your other speakers? Weakness, as you call it, is relative.

Is your receiver properly channeling Low Frequencies to the sub? Experiment with the cutoff, too.

This problem doesn't require meatball surgery.

Sound problem


Make sure all speakers that are hooked up sound ok. If any of them sound lower then the others or sound distorted you may have a speaker with a partially shorted voice coil. If speaker or speakers pop when power is first applied you may have a grounded speaker that should not be grounded. Each speaker wire rides on 6vdc and if any speaker sees a ground you will have 6v across voice coil which would explain any popping noise when first turned on and radio may play for awhile then overheat. be sure speakers are 4 ohm min per ch otherwise amp will run to hot. Just a few Guesses

12w3v2 Started making distorted bass noise at low volume


Connect each speaker coil one at a time to a square 9 volt battery and watch for the cone to move.

Also try hooking another speaker to your amp just to make sure the noise isn't in the amp.

You can use a 9 volt battery to test wire polarity also. Hook up the + wire of the speaker to the + terminal of the battery and the - speaker to the - battery terminal. If the speaker moved UP or OUT then the wiring is correct. If it moved IN or DOWN then the + and - wires are backwards on the speaker.

Also if you have two or more speakers hooked together test all the same way while they are hooked to each other. ALL of the speakers need to move in the same direction at the same time.

Clipping causes more speaker damage than anything. "Dirty Power" can happen in good quality amps too. The gain control is to match the voltage between the headunit and the amp. It is NOT a volume or boost knob. If you overdrive the first stage of the amp and then clip it damage will occur to the amp and speakers at some point.

Hi JJerky,

I suggest we go for 2 ohm to preserve the amp and not heat things up so bad.
Your Subs are Dual Voice Coil(DVC) and 2 ohms each coil. I am going to tell you the wiring to insure you get balanced response from both Subs. We will wire the Subs Voice coils in Parallel to make them 1 ohm each. Then we will wire the Amp to the subs in series to make the total load on the amp 2 ohms. When you have series to both subs each sub gets the same current.


Example of my coding :SUB1VC1+ = Subwoofer 1 Voice Coil 1 Postive terminal.

SUB1VC1+ to SUB1VC2+
SUB1VC1 - to SUB1VC2-

SUB2VC1 + to SUB2VC2 +
SUB2VC1 - to SUB2VC2 -

AMP + to SUB1VC1 +
SUB1VC1 - to SUB2VC1 +
SUB2VC1 - to AMP -

This should give you a good repsonse.

Adjust your Bass Gain down very low at first. Also cut you LPF to about 60 hz. Crank up the volume on a bass test Audio track, Adjust the Bass Gain up unitl you get distortion. The turn it back a little. This is proper setting for your Gain.

Make certain that each ouput channel from the unit is driving no more that 4 ohms each. If you have more than one speaker attached to an output then be sure they are wired in series NOT parallel. Two 4 ohm speakers in series is an 8 ohm load and the same two speakers in parallel is a 2 ohm load. If the speakers are dual voice coils then you must treat each voice coil as if it were another speaker when it comes to wiring.

How should I wire up this amp and sub


The amp's not actually a very good match for the sub, since the sub can be wired for 2 ohms or 8 ohms, and the amplifier is most efficient at 4 ohms in bridged mode. My advice would be to wire the amp in bridged mode, and wire the sub for an 8 ohm load. To do this, the amp's (+) wire should go to the (+) terminal on one of the sub's voice coils. Then run a wire from the (-) terminal on the OTHER voice coil to the (-) terminal on the amp. The remaining (+) and (-) terminals (on opposite voice coils) should be connected to each other with a wire. Your original wiring setup had the amplifier connected to only one voice coil, while the other voice coil was shorted.
