Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
Does any of you know if this error is due to software issues (including firmware) or is it hardware (Blu-ray lense or drive)... and is it fixable or only option is sending it in to Sony for service?
The solution to this error "80010514" is to restore the file system. you have to turn off the ps3. Then press and hold the powr button until it turns off again. Then do the same thing but this time it will make a beep, then it will make a double beep, and as soon as the ps3 makes a double beep release it. Its going to bring up a menu and make sure you press number 3 which is restoring file system. I would recommend going to this webpage which explains everything in better details http://www.ps3blog.co.za/2008/04/10/ps3-error-80010514-explained/

I can confirm the error 80010514 is caused by a defective BR lense. I just got this error last week. After trying to figure out what was going on I could find out the BR lense will not read the disc if it is a BR disc, I inserted a PS2 game and it worked, then inserted the BR disc once again and it was recognized by the PS3 but after trying to load the game I got the 80010514 error again.
I shut down the console and this time it didn't read any of the discs. I purchased the KES-400A replacement lense and replace it myself looking at some videos on youtube.
Right now the console is up and running and probably you would ask why I didn't send it back to Sony. The answer is simple.
My console is the 80GB Motor Storm version. As you may already know this version was discontinued and some features like the card readers, backward compatibilities with PS1 and Ps2 games were removed for the 40G version. If I send back my 80GB console to Sony, they'll send me back a 40G version without the features I just mentioned before, and I didn't pay for a 40G PS3. Another issue is I live in the Dominican Republic and send the console back to the US cost a lot of money, so I decided to fix it myself.
Fix the console isn't the big deal if you have a little knowlegde of electronics. Another thing to consider is to place the components separate so you don't confuse them when assembling the console back togehter.

Just get your lens replaced Sony doesn't have any new lenses for their bluray-drive all the lenses are taken out of broken units. They send them to china to be refurbished, replacing the broken diode with a new one and sending them back to the purchaser ie Sony or any game store that does repairs.
Sony doesn't give you any more warranty after fixing your ps3. most shops give you 3 months warranty and its around 109-124 depending on how urgent you need it including tax.
Sony asked for $190 cad for my ps3 to be fixed so i went to a game store and about 30 min later i had a working ps3.

Only way to fix it is to send it back to Sony to have them replace it.
Tips to prevent it:
It's taken from Game Revolver.
1) Ensure that your internet connection is stable. If you are using a wireless connection, make sure your signal is at least a solid 80%. If not, make the proper adjustments until it is.
2) Dust your machine regularly. Any PS3 owner will tell you that the Playstation 3 is a dust magnet. Just run a dry cloth over it every couple days, and you should be fine. This will help prevent heat issues and shorts that may occur.
3) When installing firmware and/or software, make sure you follow the instructions. Even if you have installed 6 versions prior, each one is different, and may require additional steps. Save yourself the headache and just follow them, it only takes a minute or so longer to do it right.

I had the same problem (error 80010514) and i read online that the firmware caused a hardware issue. So, i updated the firmware and it works fine. i guess it depends on your situation, but try updating first
