SOURCE: Reception upgrade or what ?

Older sets are fitted with analogue tuners which can't handle digital signals. The only way round the problem is if the TV can be used as a monitor via a scart input. The external freesat or digital set top box contain digital tuners which can then display the required digital information on the TV. These external units have scart output sockets at the back, specifically for this purpose. So it's a scart lead from your external digital device to the scart input socket at the back of the TV. The remote control for your external box is then used to select the required programmes

Sky problem

Freeview has nothing to do with satellite. FreeSAT is the one that uses a satellite dish for reception. FreeVIEW is received through the aerial.

Also, don't fall for the "digital aerial" scam. I install aerials as part of my business. I've been to homes with aerials 20 years old, covered in soot from the chimney and they still pick up Freeview perfectly well. Equally, I've been to homes where the owner has bought some gold plated multi-finned "digital high gain" monstrosity that has awful reception characteristics.

If your TV aerial is okay, then just plug it in to your Freeview receiving TV and do the tuning.

If you do want Freesat then you will need a satellite dish along with a Freesat receiver.

Humax Freesat was working fine then lost signal and now is not reognising postcode. We have unplugged/repluged, checked all cables (all OK) and tried to restart but as it is now not recognising postcode...

This can happen if the dish is slightly misaligned. I believe the postcode tables are read from a satellite which is about 0.3 degrees away from the Astra satellites. If your dish is slightly misaligned it may not be able to receive it correctly, also the following is the standard procedure which you've probably already been through, but I hope it helps:

1. Freesat Detection Fails / Invalid Postcode
  • Unplug the Foxsat-HDR from the mains and unplug the cable from your dish which is connected to the LNB IN
    connection.
  • Check that the "F-type" connector is firmly on the end of the cable.
  • Power on the and follow the Installation Wizard again.
2. If still not Detecting the signal or verifying postcode
  • Select NEXT through the Installation Wizard and then FINISH at the end.
  • Press the OK button to enter the SETUP menu and Select Manual Tune.
  • Select the following Transponder (11428 H 27500 A) from the list of Transponders.
  • Check that you are receiving stable levels for both Signal Strength & Signal Quality or >50%.
  • If you are not receiving sufficient Signal on this Transponder then you may require an installer to check your
Dish Alignment, LNB, cabling, or connectors.

Ive got a freesat dish and reciever but we get 90% signal but no quality any suggestions

Your on the wrong satellite, If your on any satellite youll get a high Signal but you wont get a high quality until your on the specific satellite. Astra 2A is for freesat. If you can bring that up on the menu then just keep moving the dish until the quality goes above 50% and that will suffice for a decent picture.

How do i connect my samsung dvd recorder sh853m to my free sat box? Also is it possible to record a channel from free sat onto my samsung recorder while also watching a different free sat channel.

Hi,

If it's a Standard-Definition (SD) FreeSat box then a SCART cable would be the normal method of connection to your DVD recorder. This would connect to the SCART/EXT OUT socket on the back of the FreeSat box and the SCART/EXT IN on the DVD recorder. However, this depends on whether your FreeSat box has multiple SCART outputs and whether you are using a SCART cable to connect to the TV.

If there is no spare SCART output socket on the FreeSat box, then you need to use an alternative connection which is common to both devices, i.e. co-axial, and make sure you are connecting from an OUT socket on the FreeSat box to an IN socket on the DVD recorder.

If you have a FreeSat HD box, then you need to connect it to the DVD recorder using an HDMI cable or another cable type that will carry an HD signal.

You will only be able to record from a different Satellite channel if you have a Dual LNB with 2 feeds to the FreeSat box. The LNB is the receiver that attaches to the arm on the satellite dish. You can determine whether you have a Dual LNB as you will have 2 cables from the Dish to the FreeSat box. They may be joined as one cable, but there will be 2 F-plugs (threaded co-axial plug) on each end.

If you don't have 2 cables then you will only be able to record the same channel as you are watching. To record another channel, you need a FreeSat box that supports this feature and each channel needs also a separate feed from the dish.

Hope this helps. If you need any further assistance please post back with the brand model number of your FreeSat box and details of the connections you are using between the FreeSat box, the TV and the DVD recorder.

Regards,
BElectric
