I have a John Deere Hydro 175 riding mower that has this strange starting procedure.

I have to crank the engine several times with the choke full on. Then I put the choke to full off and crank it again. The engine starts like this, but then I have to very slowly advance the throttle up to running speed. If I advance the throttle too fast, the engine cuts off. The mower runs great when I get it up to speed.

You may simply need a new fuel cap, vacuum in the tank will rob your fuel and stall it engine, try taking off the fuel cap and see how it runs.If this does not help you may need a new fuel pump, which runs off of crank case pressure and should take over from the choke once the tractor has started.

John Deere 697203 carburetor on a John Deere riding Mower 19.5hp engine. How to hook up the linkage for it

Question edited for clarity maker name in full.
Question moved from Hewlett Packard.

Diagrams and videos. It would have been useful to have the model number of the mower. My normal search query would be
'John Deere model replace (or service) carburetor'. Plus perhaps adding the work 'linkage' or 'choke'. All this information is out there as well as John Deere Service Manuals.

I have a John Deere Hydro 175. It will run for 10mins then starts surging and dies. It appears to be overheating. What would cause this?

during the winter a mouse nest might have formed under the tin cover that would stop air flow to the cooling fins
