The compressor is probably not running.
The Main reasons that this will happen
1 - A bad run capacitor (silver or metal capacitor)
It’s either shorted, grounded or open.
If it’s shorted a lot of times it will bulge out, (sometimes slightly)
2 - A bad start kit ( plastic capacitor and Relay connected to it )
The capacitor is either shorted or open
The relay either has an open coil between terminals #1 and #5
Or the relay is stuck.
Any time you change the capacitor or relay you should change
the other, especially if they are over a year old.
3 - A loose, burnt or disconnected wire
4 - Wired wrong
5 Compressor is open (windings burnt open)
6 Low on charge not getting enough cooling back to compressor, (Feel top of compressor to see if it’s hot it shouldn‘t be)
7 Some compressors have a black plastic overload under the compressor cap which could be bad.

My window air conditioner is not cooling at all, even though the fan works and I hear the motor humming.

Here's a pretty simple test - take off the cover if possible, remove the air filter - I know some it's trickier on some and they have a filter that slides in from the side versus a hinged cover, etc. you can pull off or down - but there are metal fins behind that filter. Turn the A/C unit on and try and feel those fins. If they are getting cold and your fan is on - it should be drawing hot air in right there, cooling it down and cool air should come out of the vent. If you turn the A/C on and feel those fins - hear the humming - but they are not getting cold - you have a bigger issue. Basically, your compressor isn't sending refrigerant through the coils and there's nothing to cool the air down with. *Could be other components - but that's a pretty basic test just to check functionality. If it's getting cold - but you're not blowing cold air - those fins could just be clogged with dust, etc. You have to be careful cleaning those as they bend easily. They sell special cleaner for them (you'll want to use it outside - usually an acid based cleaner) and a device that looks like a comb to get in between the fins to straighten if they get bent. Word to the wise - those fins being straight and clean allow the air flow to come through unrestricted - definitely less is more on the cleaning side; you'll want to be very careful. Air vent problem

ac evaporators inside a car become useless f the evaporator fins are blocked with a black greasy gunk
It will stop air flow from the blower motor and will not allow the air to be cooled as it passes through the fins
It is unlikely that there is a blockage in the vents
if a section of the ac evaporator box can be removed , check with alight and mirror to see all the fins are clean and if not , use an ac fin cleaner product to melt the gunk of the fins

Toyota Corolla 1995. Quality of air conditioner reduced when stopped (traffic light) or moving at slow speed (condenced city traffic) No problem on the highway. Checked freon gas and fan. Understand that...

Normal, the ac heat exchanger condenser need air moving across the fins to remove the heat. While moving in town the condenser isn't remove the meat that is building up the it's aluminum fins. Even though the vehicle uses an electric fan. The fan is used to cool the engine temperature. If you Toyota is equip-ed with automatic transmission. The electric fan will need to pull enough air to cool the engine temperature, automatic transmission fluid, air conditioner condenser, and maybe power steering condenser to cool the power steering fluid. Later model of vehicles/trucks are using different refrigerants instead R134A in which you Toyota uses.

The simples way to explain is the ac remove heat from inside your Toyota and this heat is removed by the refrigerants inside your ac in the car. To cool the refrigerant this coolant is removed to the heat exchanger condenser located in front of the engine radiator. So, while moving at 60mph there is enough air flow through the radiator, ac head condenser, and other aluminum heat exchangers. GB...stewbison

Coleman central ac is not shutting down. Thermostat clicks off but compressor and fan keep running and cooling

This is either a stuck relay or contactor or the Tstat is bad.. Try shuting down the power to the unit and wait for about 3 munites and trun it back on .. if that does not clear it up My money is on a stuck contactor

The ac starts out cold and stays that way on hwy driving but starts blowing warm air in stop and go traffic. why?

Either clutch coil is heating up and letting go Or one of the sensors is defective. Or there is a restriction somewhere in the line (open up hood and look for frost on a/c lines.)

AIR CONDITIONER WILL NOT COOL WHEN IDLED

Typical problem of R-134 freon. It just doesn't perform well at idle, though hardware changes over the years have improved performance in later models.

However, be sure to cover the bases. Check freon charge with gauge set. Don't guess. Make sure the pressures are correct and that cooling fan is functional and nothing restricting air flow at condenser & radiator. High pressure from car wash wands can fold-over the cooling fins at radiator thus restricting air flow. I suspect all this is good but you should make certain to remove any doubt.

My ac stopped putting out cool air on a hot day. I turned off the ac and replaced 2 dirty filters and waited 4 hours to turn back on but the air does not seem cool. Did I not wait long enough time for it...

check to see if the fan is working at the condensing unit. if it is, check that the fan is pulling heat off the unit as it should. make sure the cage is clean. no restrictions as far as air flow. clean . check duct work for leaks. inside, if you replaced the filter/s. the evaporator is dirty. call a prof,

Hums and freezes up????

The fan motor must have been stopping. If the fan stops, for sure the fins will freeze because there is no air flowing. common Fan motor problems defective bearing or bushing and starting condenser. If the bearing is defective, it will heat up and seize. Have the fan motor checked. The fact that the fins are freezing, means that there is enough freon and the compressor is working.
