Not hitting hard enough or the platen (rubber Part) is not aligned with the printwheel. make sure printwheel is snapped in place correctly.

I know this is pretty basic but did you push thelever next to the print hammer to the back to latch the mech. to the rear?

This problem is usually caused by an old ribbon theey do dry out when left in tthe typewriter a long time, also if the paper is really hard or has a slick surface the ink from the ribbon will not stick to the paper.

well, it's been over a year and i wonder if you still need manual.
you can go to smithcorona's website and check out the Office 2000 series manual found on their support page. Although probably not the right model (this one has a small one line screen) it may match all the functions you need to know about. I have a model 5F (78DS) and it helped me a great deal.

To switch fonts on this typewriter, you need to change the letter wheel. Unfortunately, there is no practical way to change the letter wheel in the middle of a document.
