Question about Garden

1 Answer

My LawnBoy mower 195 cc 4 cycle that starts fine. After about 5 minutes of grass cuting the engine starts to cycle until it dies. If I leave the mower sit for about 5 minutes, it again starts fine and runs for a few minutes until repeating the process. I have replaced the spark plug and the air filter. There is plenty of oil in the engine. What could be causing this?

It sounds as though it is starved for fuel. Check the pinhole vent in the fuel filler cap. if it is plugged, the engine will still draw fuel, until a vacuum is pulled on the tank, resulting in no fuel. If this doesn't fix you. check for adequate fuel at the carb, and wirk either forward or backwards from that point, depending on what you find. I'm betting on the vent!
Try it; it may be just the thing!

Do the basics, check the battery voltage first. If there is not enough battery voltage present when you try to engage the blades it will certainly die and may not start until the battery is either charged or replaced. There are other items to check but do this first.

What is wrong with my push mower?

Sounds like something relating to the engine is overheating and the heat sensor switches off the machine.

Zero turn mower is sputtering and dies

Check everything is clean. Check the air filter is clean, check that the engine cooling fan, cutting blades and cutting deck are free of grass. Check all the drive belt pulleys to ensure accumulated grass is not jamming anything. Check the fuel filler cap is clean and the breather hole works.

I have the exact same problem. I read on another site that the blowout hole in the back of the mower where the grass goes into the catcher must be cleared of any grass or dirt. I don't use the grass catcher and indeed the hole was full of dirt and grass. I cleared out what I could with my hands and a screwdriver, and magically somehow the cord retracted about a foot. Enough to start the mower with. It still doesn't retract all the way, but it was an improvement. I may have worn out the spring pulling and tugging on it trying to get it to retract, but ok for now.
Please share if you find a more permanent solution. Mower is barely a year old.

Take the engine cover off and check to see if there is dried grass, leaves, etc packed inbetween the cooling fins on the engine. Some animal may have decided to make a home there.

I took my carburetor off and blew it out with compressed air. Runs great now. Make sure to get all of it. Little screw on bottom has a hole in it too!

What is the 2 cycle oil to gas mixture for a 2 cycle lawnboy

20:1 gas to oil is a good place to start. Some mowers thin down to 80:1. If you can tell me the model of the mower I can be more specific, but starting at 20:1 will assure you have adequate protection for the engine. If it's exhausting lots of oil smoke after it has warmed up; you can cut back a little each time until you have minor oil smoke.

at 20:1 you need to add 6.4 ounces of oil to one gallon of gas.

Here's a nifty calculator for various ratios:

http://www.csgnetwork.com/oilfuelcalc.html

Enter 1 gallon of gas, then change the ratio number and then press calculate and the number of ounces per gallon will be displayed.
