Trying to locate your laptop would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack unless you know who took it.
If you had setup a power on password and a hard disk password then this would have prevented unauthorized access to the laptop and access to the data on the hard disk. Removing the hard disk and inserting it into another computer would still prevent access to the data on the hard disk without the hard disk password.
