If your fans are running at high speeds and loud, that would be an indication of either a fan failure, or a CPU running too hot. If it is the CPU running hot, if you change the thermal grease to phase change material it will cool the system very good.

If you want a quick fix, use one of the laptop pads with fans you can buy at many stores.

Sounds like your machine is overheating big time. You didnt say if it boots up or not, but I wouldnt keep trying until someone can look at it. You probably need a new fan, possibly hard drive, hopefully not mother board.

No display and not booting after getting very hot is likely to be a GPU issue. This is repairable.

Reset button on a powerbook g4

The Powerbook G4 power button functions like a reset button if you hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer powers down.
  1. Hold the power button in for a few seconds (until you see the screen turn off/go black and hear the fans & hard drive stop spinning).
  2. Press the power button again to turn your computer on.
  3. If you have more trouble, you may need to boot in Safe Mode or "perform a Safe Boot":
Press and hold down the "Shift" key immediately after you hear the start-up tone. Release the "Shift" key when the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

The computer fan can be heard when the computer is started but the screen does not light up. What do I try next? The computer is the one piece macbook with a 13 inch screen one and one-half years old.

Take it to an authorized Apple repair depot, for service, whether the warranty is still valid, or even if the warranty has expired.

My screen flickers and goes out sporadically.

Bad video graphics chip on logic board. Probably made by Nvidia. Repair logic board or replace the logic board.

The screen suddenly went black while connected to an electrical outlet. Nothing works.

Three immediate possibilities in order of expense:
1) Make sure the brightness is on. Press the F2 key.
2) Screen backlight could be blown out, especially if you can hear the disk seeking, fans, etc. even though the screen is black. Connect your Mac to an external display or TV using the appropriate adapters. If you get an image, you need a new backlight or LCD panel.
3) Entire machine is plotz, especially if you hear absolutely no chimes, disk movement, optical reset, fans, etc. This may indicate a power board or logic board issue.

My Apple screen stays black!!!!!

If you hear the fan spinning and the screen stays blank chances are very good that the video chip on your logic board has failed. That was a common issue with many Apple laptops of that generation.
Before you give up on it however try resetting the power manager and reseating the RAM. Below is a link to instructions on how to reset the power manager on a powerbook.

It may not be a fan, it may be the cd drive spinning up. Is there a cd in it?

Black Screen

Thinking about this one I really think the video had nothing to do with the black screen. I would try to things one is reset the power management. Not know exactly what Powerbook you have I will give the most common way. Remove the Battery and the power cord from the powerbook, wait a few minutes then hold the power button for about 40 seconds. Then put the battery and power cord back in and restart it. The second thing to do is boot from the install disk that came with it and run the disk utility. I have also seen bad RAM do this but you would get at least a chime on startup.
