Need help w/ethernet connection

I have recently purchased a new modem it is a d-link dcm-202 model. It has either usb or ethernet connection. When I hook up directly to ethernet port on my computer the display lights on modem never come up for ethernet connection. When I try to open the internet it will not start. I did diagnostic connection test and it says there is no connection to check my ethernet cables. I am currently using a d-link 524 router along with this modem. Can you give me tips on what to do. Is it possible that there is something wrong with my computers ethernet or nic card. I recently took it to Best buy and they checked everything on computer they said that nothing is wrong with it. Please help

Re: need help w/ethernet connection

Do this go to start >> then run , type >> inetwiz << then tell it to connect using my local area network , tell it to automatically discovery of proxy , then click next, no to setup email address, "you can do later if want to" then click finish and reboot computer
then try opening internet explorer , make sure if you have a firewall "you have to allow access to internet when asked "

Let me know if that got you fixed or not

Does your cable modem have wireless internet? If so, you can buy a Netgear wireless usb port adapter for about $20 and use that to connect wirelessly to the internet. Your pc has usb port connections - right? (Usb port looks like a rectangle)

If you don't want to use a wireless connection you can purchase a cable modem with a usb connection for about $65. You run the ethernet cable to the modem and then a usb cable from the modem to your pc.

If you have a serial cable connection on your pc (looks like a round circle with tiny metal pins in it) you can buy a gender changer and convert that to usb (in case you dont have a usb connection or need another one). You can buy one for about $11.

You can buy an I/O Gear bluetooth usb adapter for $13 and pick up the internet via bluetooth by putting it in your usb port but I'm unsure how well it would work with Win 98.

If you have another pc that has an ethernet connection you could use good old fashioned bi directional printer cable and network both computers together. You may need to upgrade to win xp for networking capabilities.

Adding a PCI ethernet card?

One port on the router is an "Ethernet" port -- look closely to see the 8 wires in the socket.

You'll need a similar 8-wire connector on your computer,
and an "Ethernet-cable" that has 8 strands of wire.

Adding-in the PCI Ethernet card will add an 8-wire connector,
so that the Ethernet-cable can be connected.

Be sure to buy a 'PCI' Ethernet adapter, not 'PCI-E', and not 'ISA'.
It may come with a CD-ROM containing software to be installed.

Don't pay more than $20. Or, find a "computer-geek" -- he/she probably will have one or more "spare" PCI Ethernet cards to give to you.

I have a Siemens 4200 ethernet/USB ADSL modem on a machine running Windows XP. If I switch to a new machine with Windows 7 64-bit, will I need a new driver for the modem?

If its connected via ethernet you may not need an updated driver of the modem but and updated driver of your LAN card. If its connected via USB then yup try the manufacturers website for the modem divers

Can i connect usb and ethernet at same time with siemens 4200 ?

I did not know you could do it either, but I never tried. I can see an instant work around...make them both ethernet. You surely have more than one RJ46 connection in the modem/router. I figure you had the one closest to the modem was the USB and the one further away way the ethernet cable. So like I said, they probably supplied you with a short e cable so just plug that in. Assuming of course you have an eithernet adapter in the computer closest to the modem.
Try one thing first- plug them in the way you always did, unplug the modem for a minute and plug it back in and see if it detects them the way you had it set up...reboot each of the computers after that...if it is gonna work...this is the way.
Hope this helps Tim, please leave rating, thank you kindly

I have 2 computers. I can connect to the internet wirelessly with the XP one through a Netgear router. My HP Touchsmart,Vista Home Premium, purchased recently, will connect through an Ethernet cable, but...

Are you sure that your PC has a built in wireless function and not just a regular modem ??

If you just have a modem you will need to purchase a USB wireless interface the link below will take you to one perfectly compatible with your router.

Good luck ;)

I am trying to install a cable modem with usb and ethernet connections on a windows xp computer.

Well there are 2 ways
via Ethernet
1.) connect the ethernet from the modem to the ethernet of the computer via the cable provided and thats should basically setup and give you an ip automatically
Via Usb
2.) install the drivers that came on a cd with the model
2.) follow the onscreen instructions and connect the modem via the usb cable when it tells you to
3.) when setup is complete it will create a connect icon for you, just run it to connect
