Engine won't run unless the choke is on - Deere 14SB Push Mower

I recently picked up a 14SB walk behind lawn mower which hadn't been ran in probably around 5 years according to the previous owner. It has a Kawasaki engine in it. I replaced the spark plug, cleaned off the air filter, and put some gas in it to see where I was starting from. After about 4 or 5 pulls with the throttle pushed all the way forward, the engine started up. I let it idle for a little second and pulled the throttle back just a little, which caused it to die. I started it up again and it did the same thing. I've pulled the carb off, taken it apart, sprayed carb cleaner through everything, and it still has the same problem. When the throttle is pushed all the way forwards, it closes a butterfly valve closes to the intake to choke off air flow and will start and continue to run like this. However, as soon as this valve is opened back up it dies. It seems to me that it's not getting enough fuel, but do you have any suggestions or things to try before I take it in to someone? Thanks in advance for the help!

It's starving for fuel. When you push the throttle all the way forward it closes the choke. You took it apart but you probably didn;t get all the junk out of it. Easy fix is to put some SeaFoam into the tank and run it. This cleans all deposits and debris from the jets. I have used this stuff and put it in the tank and start the engine and sit back and let it run. After about 5 minutes the engine will smooth out and run fine.

My john deere 14sb mower starts but kills when I engage the blade

Check your safety seat switch. Unplug the wiring harness to the switch and place a paper clip into the harness. This will bypass the switch unless you have a continuity tester to test the switch.

I have a John Deere lawn mower with a Briggs & Straton 190cc 875 engine series engine ... When mowing the grass I ran the front portion of the mower into a shrub ,the engine stopped , I investigated...

Could be the spring has been stretched when you ran into the bush. With the engine running but out of gear move this spring by hand and see if the engine speeds up If it does I sometimes cut off the end of the spring and pull a piece out and make a new end with needle nose pliers or buy a new spring. I like to repair mine.

I have a 15hp tecumseh engine that will only run with the choke on.

You have a partially gummed up carburator. Get a bottle of carburator cleaner to add to your fuel. Follow those directions and you should be fine.

The alternate method may be to get a can of starter fluid. Spray the fluid into the air intake as the engine is running with the choke on. When the engine sounds better take it off of the choke status. Joe

My John Deere 14sb walk behind mower will start, and then within three seconds, it will die.

Sounds like after the prime fuel is burnt up, it dies. This sounds like either a jet is clogged up or a diaphragm, depending on your carburetor, needs some attention. Look at what engine you have on the mower. You may be able to clean the jet, depending on your mechanical abilities, yourself.

Mower will stay running but acts like its geting choked

It probably needs a good cleaning. Take it off and get a can of chemtool spray (the stuff is awesome) and soak that ****** with it. Then take an air nozzle and blow it all clean, and reinstall.
