Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a desktop XP and a laptop vista and trying 2 connect the 2 with netgear router. Laptop is working but the XP will not give access to internet due to firewall. I guess it thinks the netgear is a threat. I've tried disabling it from control panel ....now what do i try?

What error are you getting? do me a favor. go to the laptop. go to start in the space type in cmd.exe and it should pop up a black little box on the start menu. right click that bar and select run as administrator. from there type in ipconfig.exe

You should get a setting there with your ip address and default gateway. let me know what the default gateway is.

it should be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

let me know if you get something like that

ok now do the same thing for the desktop. it will give you your desktops ip address and also the same gateway

for you to receive that information from the laptop means that you are connected through that gateway which is the address of the router. type in this command in the black command screen

    ping 192.168.1.1

do this on the laptop that has no connection

you should receive a series of information packets that are being sent to the router to test it, it should come back with a message at the end that says 0% loss

let me know if you get that

btw. you are getting internet on your desktop correct?

  • ruben barrera
    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

i apologize i read it backwards....do the command line testing on the desktop with no connection to see if you get the same default gateway as the laptop. let me know if you get anything....

on the desktop to get to cmd just go to start menu look for run and type in the run blank cmd.exe and hit enter

then type in the ipconfig.exe for me and let me know what the results are

    thanks

ok you are definitely not connecting to the netgear. what antivirus are you using?

  • ruben barrera
    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

are you connected via a wireless card on the desktop or are you hardwired to the router with a rj45-ethernet cable?

  • ruben barrera
    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

malwarebytes is anti malware not antivirus. mozilla firefox is an internet browser much like internet explorer.

the options most people have for antivirus is AVG, McAfee, or Norton

lets do this. go to your desktop
go to start menu, look for control panel and click it, look for network connections and click that. it will open up all the ways you can connect to the internet that are available.

in that window you will see your Local Area Connection, if you are using a ethernet wire this will be the method that you connect with. if you right click this connection and select repair. tell me what it says when it is done repairing okay.

    thanks ruben

  • ruben barrera
    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

going back to what you said about the wires. you should have one wire running from the back of the desktop to the router connecting it directly to it. if you do not, then you do not have a connection to that device and will not be able to connect. so verify that you do have a yellow, blue, or grey wire connected and let me know

  • ruben barrera
    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

yes trendmicro is it. trend micro would also be the culprit if you tried connecting to your router and a pop up came up from trendmicro with the ip address of your router saying it wanted to connect to your desktop. select yes or no...if you hit deny then you are blocked out of your router until you go into trendmicro and reset the allow category to accept that ip address you got from your laptop of 192.168.1.1 let me know if you vaguely remember that. lol

    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

well lets clear up a few things before we move forward. i believe if we take these next few steps we will have you up and running shortly.

go back to your desktop and load that black command screen again

to get that if you forgot its go to start select run, type in run blank cmd.exe hit enter.

in the command screen type ipconfig.exe again

    you should see

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    IP address 172. whatever
    Subnet mask 255.255. whatever
    Default Gateway: 172. whatever

if you dont let me know what it says instead, this will tell me if you are using a wireless connection or ethernet line

    thanks
    ruben

ok good. thats resolved. lets move to the trend micro now. i believe there is our culprit.

i would like for you to uninstall trend micro, if you are not familiar with its use i do not suggest continuing to use it, it can lock you out of many websites by accident. i would like for you to go to your start taskbar, go to control panel, go to add/remove programs and look for trendmicro and uninstall it. we are going to replace trendmicro with the more friendlier AVG which is free and we can just turn on the windows firewall. you should be okay with this. trendmicro is a great product but is very complicated if you are not use to setting it up.

Let me know when you are done uninstalling trendmicro.

    Thanks
    Ruben

yes, check your internet access as soon as you get it rebooted

  • ruben barrera
    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

    okay, no problem

go to start menu, go to control panel, go to network connections, look for Local Area Connection and right click it, go to properties, you will get a screen pop up, go to advanced, disable firewall connection, then go back to general tab, look for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), highlight it and select the Properties button below it, it will open a screen tab that says (TCP/IP) properties. Tell me what you see there, usually it should all be greyed out

  • ruben barrera
    ruben barrera Jul 30, 2009

ok thats your problem. it should be obtain ip address automatically, it should be obtain dns address automatically.

select those boxes by checking them and it should be greyed out. then make sure you hit apply and ok and close that all out

now try to get online after a few seconds

  • ruben barrera

you have malwarebytes. run that once a week to keep the malware off your system, next go to www.download.com and look for AVG. Install that program and it will protect you, the benefit is you dont have to pay for it. I install those two programs on all business units I work on and it works very well, the key is the Malwarebytes. Keep updating the definitions to make sure you have the most recent for malwarebytes. to do that open malwarebytes and select the update tab. it may restart your machine after its done which is normal.

at any rate you are good to go. so we can close this call out and i appreciate your patience with resolving the issue. I was glad to be of assistance and dont forget to visit us if you have any other problems. Kindly rate your experience, 4 thumbs are always appreciated!

    Good Luck!

My HP laptop won't connect to my NETGEAR WGR614v7 router

What is your operating system (Vista/XP, older Windows)? Have you turned on the router's wireless router radio from the computer that is connecting? (Login to the router's setup page at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (depending on the router) and go to Advanced menu and click Wireless Settings.) While you are there, enable the SSID Broadcast (another checkbox hust below the one for Wireless Router Radio). Now check if your laptop can see the router.

Additional FAQs that might be helpful are at http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2589. That page has a link to setting up XP for wireless networking as well.

rourke, you shouldn't be entering the same settings on both router and desktop. I should only be on the router. It seems like something with DHCP is misconfigured on your router. Make sure it (DHCP) is enabled.

At the moment all of them have internet w different IP's (000.000.0.001, 000.000.0.002,etc.). What I want to achieve is that I can use the Printer that is connected via USB to my PC Vista (desktop) and share files. Right now the only thing been able to do is that my PC Vista see my Laptop but Can't find my PC on my laptop. Anybody, Help?

Probably an issue with the DCHP broadcast flag in Vista. See the following article - I would recommend doing this first, if you have not already done so:

Windows Vista home + Windows XP Professional Networking issue

Make sure domain settings to your server are correct on the notebook computer. These settings are located in the control panel of the system setting.

Whats the operating system of your server?

Make sure the firewall in windows security is turned off too. Sometimes that thing sneaks up on you.

I haven't used the home edition of Vista but another reason why it might not be working is because it isn't the business version. Microsoft might have added extra security to prevent the home version from connecting to a server. I know we use the business version of Vista at work and it is working that way on the intranet server without a problem.

I would check with Microsofts website on that.

With Vista on the Laptop it should be just a matter of double clicking the router in the network settings, vista should automatically configure the connection.
This has happened to me before and this is what I did just to see if it worked, and it did flawlessly.
