Question about Sony STR-DE845 Receiver

1 Answer

STR-DE845 I have had this receiver for a while. a while back i tried hooking up a gamecube to it and then i was not able to get any sound out of it. I put it away for a few years and i came back to it today to see if i can get it to work again. I hooked up my cd player to it and i get NO sound from the speakers. I do not know if my receiver has a problem or what but i dont know how to fix it. Am i doing something wrong?

My sony str-de845 has an error

First I would try to reset it. With it off, hold the power button for about 5-10 seconds. It should either reset, or tell you to press enter to reset it.

Sony STR-DE845 5.1 Receiver, No Sound

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts and overloads.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced hands-on tech.

Sony atr-de845

Open it up, check by where the power cord comes in there should be a fuse. Check to see if it is blown. If so it is an easy fix. Replace the fuse with same type. If not the capacitors are gone and that is expensive to replace.
