Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

I'm assuming that my Kirkland refrig is made by Whirlpool. The model # is ST 14 CKX KQ03 Type 14TFA The food freezes on the top shelf at the rear of the refrig. I put a small bowl of water in that area and it froze, not solid but formed a large ice chunk floating in the water. I turned down the thermostat from 3 to 2 (5 nbeing the coldest). The door seal is ok and there is no evidence of leakage such as condensation on the door.

Give the fridge some time to the thermostat change. You may want to put a fridge thermometer inside to monitor the temp changes to prove the thermostat is controlling correctly.
Put it in the center rack, about the middle. The very back is the coldest. Watch for changes
and make adjustments. If fridge does not respond to thermostat changes, it could
need replacement.

We are getting water on the top shelf of the refrigerator under the freezer. Our model number is 46-81152 purchased on 6-16-97 Mike O'Malley

That is not a good model number. Model number tag is located in the fresh food section. I will assume that it is a top freezer. If so. Defrost drain hole is blocked. Water cannot drain to defrost pan under unit in the back by compressor. If this is the case, water has to go somewhere. Right to the top shelf in freshfood section. I am sorry Mike, I can only guess without a model number to look up system. One other thing, and check this first. If the controls are located in the back. On the left side is a little trough that will pull out. It gets clogged up. Pull out and remove obstruction. It is part of the drain system. If clogged, defrost water goes on top shelf in fresh food section. A lot of typing. Hope this helps you.

Water seems to accumulate on the top shelf of my refrigerator. It thrn turns to ice and a while later it is liquid again.

Remove the food and the ice maker from the freezer ( if equiped ) . Remove the rear freezer panel . Using a hair dryer , start in the middle , below the coils , defrosting , until you see the drain hole . Use hot water to help defrost the hole . Once water starts going thru the hole , use a small hose inserted into the hole , and blow thru , to remove any unseen debris in the drain line . Use an ALUMINUM or COPPER solid wire , 14-16 guage , with the insulation completely off , and insert one end into the drain hole as far as possible without any force . Wrap the other end about 1 1/2 to 2 turns , around the black rod (defrost heater) , above the hole . When refrig goes into defrost , the heat will transfer from the heater , to the wire , keeping the hole from freezing up again .

Whirlpool Model ED5SHAXML12 is freezing food in refrigerator even when dial is at off. Happened from one day to the next.

At the refrig controls , the freezer control , controls how much air goes into the refrigerator section . Open the refrig door , and up at the top left , put your hand over the damper (air vent) . Turn the freezer control from high to low , and feel the difference in the air flow . If you turn your freezer control to a lower setting , less cold air will enter the refrig . Think of it as : the freezer control adjusts the temperature , and the refrig control , tells how long to run the compressor . In actuality , this is how it works . However , with the dial (refrigerator thermostat) in the off position and refrig still running , this indicates a bad thermostat . Pt # 2198202 .

I have a model ET20GM Whirlpool refrigerator. Whenever the top freezer automatically defrosts, water has started to drip down to the top glass shelf in the refrigerator. This is happening twice a day. ...

Remove the food and icemaker (if it has one) . Remove all the screws holding the rear panel on and remove the rear panel . Using a hair dryer , start in the middle below the coils , and defrost until you see the drain hole . Keep defrosting the hole , sometimes hot water helps , until water starts to go down . Use a small hose inserted into the hole , and blow thru to blow out any debris collected in the drain tube . Get a piece of ALUMINUM wire , stripped of insulation (14-16 guage ) and put as far into the drain hole as it will go without any force . Sometimes bending slightly will help it go farther . Wrap the other end 1 or 2 turns around the black rod ( defrost heater ) above the hole . When refrig goes into defrost , the heater will transfer heat to the aluminum wire , keeping the drain from freezing again . Reinstall the back panel and icemaker ( if equiped ) and the food .
