Samsung P28 freezes or blue screens on startup

My Samsung P28 has started freezing or blue screening on start up. I'll try removing the processor heatsink and reseating with new compound. My thoughts are the cause is a failing solder joint, connection or PCB failure. If anyone can advise on where to start looking I'd much appreciate it. Its been a cracking machine and i'll be sad to see it go.

This laptop is kind of old to put much money into it. I'll have to assume that you're diagnosing an overheating problem - screen lock up. BSD's or blue screen of death is caused by drivers. Before going to all the trouble of diagnosing hardware do a Windows repair. This is part of the original CD. If this doesn't work then do an operating reinstall. This should clear up all possibility of a BSD. Now to the hardware. If your fan has failed then I suspect the CPU and/or the video chip. You can check solder connections around the power supply connector. Good luck

I need more than that to tell you how to troubleshoot the problem you're having. Most freezing or locking up is caused by a program not functioning properly. Start your computer in safe mode. Go to your start button, type in the search RUN right click and run as Administrator, then when the box opens type in MSCONFIG and click run/yes/okay (which ever you see). This will bring up a new window. On the main tab you'll see three options. Normal start up, Safe Mode, and Selective Startup/Custom Startup. Click safe mode hit okay and it will restart the computer into Safe Mode. This will prevent all startup programs and services from starting. Let the computer run and if it still freezes then you know it's a hardware issue. If it doesn't, it's a program error. Take the time then to diagnose either the hardware or the software. If it's the hardware, check to make sure that everything is seated correctly, that the ram is firmly and fully in their sockets. Make sure your hard drives are connected correctly. Check the power supply make sure it isn't dying and causing you too lose power.

Look at the motherboard and check for heat damage, blown resistors and other components.

If it's software, go back into MSconfig, go into selective start up and choose one or two programs at a time and restart the computer until it freezes. If you get it to freeze with a specific program you know it's the culprit.

Also, freezing tends to be related to bad configurations. I dont' know if you've been trying to overclock the processor, the ram, or the video card (onboard or dedicated) could also cause these issues. Check your bios and make sure your settings are correct. Stop using any overclocking software.

Lastly check temperature. The normal operating temperature of a desktop PC is 130 degrees F with some of the more powerful processors and video cars. 90 degrees F while not under load. If your temperature is getting too hot it could be crashing. This could indicate a bad processor, a heatsink that isn't seated or in contact with the processor anymore, malfunctioning fans, poor circulation, or even dust/grime/dirt getting into the computer.

You could be experiencing this GUI lag or freezing if you have background processes that are taking priority over it while they run drawing more of the computers resources. Let it sit for a little big and see if it corrects itself.

Lastly, if you're getting blue screens of death because of windows, get the logs for them and post them so we can go over them and see if anything else is happening.

Aspire 5475 freezes on startup

It is most certainly a driver, but if you cant access the safe mode also that could be a hardware issue.. Try to troubleshoot with a windows installation cd. Put it in and boot the pc. It will start the windows instalation, you choose repair computer and not install windows. The command prompt will open, try to troubleshoot from there.. Thanks!

Pls,i have a nc6000 Hp laptop of 40GB Hard disk, 1500MHz processor and a 256MB RAM which i added 512MB RAM to upgrade to 768MB RAM. It started to freeze/hang and prompting the mouse cursor to...

from the off position, turn on, continuously hit the F8 key to force the startup menu, select last known good configuration and reboot. If this does not work, do the F8 thing again, and select safe mode. If you cannot reboot, you will have to do a clean reinstal using your factory recovery CD. If you can get into safe mode, immediately start saving your files to whatever media device you can.

go to start/run and type cmd and hit enter - type in chkntfs /c e and hit enter, reboot. This will start and system checking procedure on bootup. Again, if this does not fix things you will have to boot from your recovery CD.

Good luck!
