SOURCE: squealing dryer

The dryer drum support on the rear of the drum is worn and must be replaced.
It is a ball and cup design. It is worn out.

SOURCE: Load squeal

if you can take your dryer apart, you'll have to take the drum out and lubricate the bearing that is located in the center under the drum while there check wellness of your heat element if located there. Anyway use high temp grease on this bearing looks more like a ball

SOURCE: Maytag gas dryer squealing

Hi, this is a belt issue. make sure the tension on the belt/motor is sufficient. adjust to specs. if the belt is fine, this will be bad bearings in the roller assembly.

Replace the rollers in this case.

Maytag electric dryer drum starts and stops turning but keeps going

I would think you are on the right track, possibly a belt, I would also check all the rollers or idlers while you are replacing the belt.
Enjoy and best wishes

Squealing dryer

Sounds like the drum bearings are going bad, or at the very least need lubrication. thats what your problem is.

Maytag dryer makes loud squeeling noise when it gets hot. Drys clothes but makes such a loud squeeling noise. Have to let it cool down to continue to dry.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

A loud squeal is usually caused by either an idler pulley bearing. a drum roller bearing or a loose belt.

Since you did not include a model number I have to respond with generic across the board information. Idler pulleys, drum rollers and belts for Maytags can be found on this link:
(Just past half way down the page)

You can enter your model number on this page and find your parts: (Choose model number)

If you do repair it yourself.... do yourself a HUGE favor and either take a picture of the belt routing or draw a belt routing diagram BEFORE dis-assembly.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Hi. My Neptune dryer was not sounding as I remembered it. A higher pitch than usual while it was drying clothes. Then I noticed it was reluctant to start when pushing the "start" button, with...

burning smell is because the drum is not rolling and the motor is trying to turn, hopefully it did not damage the motor: more then likely it the drum rollers/glides, might want to check the idler arm here is a website that will help. depending on fast you need your dryer a good and cheap place to buy parts is on eBay, of course they can be purchased locally, Good Luck Tim:

Our dryer was making a loud squeaking noise for a while now it is tripping the circuit breaker as soon as it is started what do you think is our problem.

The drum rides on a bearing in the rear which cause the squeal. The squeal eventually cuts into the bearing and the whole drum begins to rub against the heating element. This causes the breaker to trip.

When running it has a very high squeal after it has been turned on a few minutes. maybe a belt issue?

es the belt runs on a belt tensioner that has a roller with a breaing inside the roller. The bearing is locked up causing the roller not to move no longer. This is making the belt squeal. If ran much longer the belt will burn off deleting the squeal although the drum will not turn. Replace the belt and the roller assembly. The tensioner will still be fine to use for it is a spring tension device that out last any dryer

the drum of the dryer that holds the clothes has a seal surrounding the entire front of the drum. once dried out alot of build up is accumulated and will cause your problem. also the belt and tensioner should be looked at as well when opened up for inspection

Dryer squeal @ start up; access

Below are some links, courtesy of, that will assist you in diagnosing/repair of your dryer. You may have to enter your model number in the search box to access some of the information.

Below is a parts breakdown/disassembly procedure for your dryer.

It sounds as if you have a dry rear drum roller. Check the above link first for parts and teardown.

You can also obtain more appliance information at my website,

If your dryer is noisy, check these:

Idler pulley
Rear drum bearing
Blower wheel
Rollers Many dryers use rollers or wheels to support the clothes drum. When these rollers are worn, they can be noisy. You should replace the whole set of rollers at the same time.

Idler pulley Dryers have a tension or idler pulley that keeps tension on the main drive belt. When it's worn, it can be noisy. When that happens, don't lubricate it. Just replace it.

Glides Many dryers use nylon or plastic glides at the front of the clothes drum for support. When these are worn, they can be noisy. When that happens, replace them.

Rear drum bearing Some dryers support the clothes drum in the rear with a center spindle instead of rollers. The spindle may be a ball-and-socket type support or a shaft through a sleeve. When the components are worn, they may squeak, squeal, or rub. You can't repair them. Just replace them when they're worn.

Blower wheel Your dryer's blower wheel pulls air over the heat source, through the clothes drum, and past the thermostats, then pushes it out the exhaust duct. The blower wheel, which is usually plastic, may wear out over time. But if it's noisy, it may simply be clogged with lint. Clean the blower and test to see if the dryer is still noisy. If it is, you probably need to replace it.
