Bad ground but the time of day is also a factor. If you are trying to talk when there is a lot of ground noise you may not get out more than a half mile or so.

I believe it to be feedback but be aware of your Standing wave ratio because using a linear amp radiates signal to the point that it could cause that light to come on. There is a problem if the radiated signal is feeding back into the amp a a higher level that it can withstand over time.

SOURCE: swr meter not moving.

If the radio is working don't worry about the meter unless you absolutely want it. These little meters are not very accurate or reliable. Get an external SWR meter to check the antenna.

Your SWR is probably NOT fine. You need to use an external meter if you have had work done to the radio. Especially if you have had a swing mod done to the radio. When you do this, the dead key of the radio is lower then the calibration knob on the radio can adjust for. It will always come up lower then it actually is.

Your radio might have been fine before the work was done on it because it was putting out very little power. Now you are most likely putting out 50 watts or more. Big jump from 4 watts.

When your raise the power in a radio, you will notice more when the antenna is not properly tuned.

In most cases with a stock CB, even when the antenna is not even near tuned, you will get a reading less then 1.5 anyway.

the more power you put out, the more important it is to have a good match.

But an external SWR meter, and check it. be careful if the ANT light is on.

You might also want to check your coax, connections to it, and your antenna for anything wrong.

You got your radio peaked? Most likely, however, the pot for the antenna warning indicator is VR6. I always check that after peaking a radio.

Hello there:
Rule of thumb is go by what the manual tells you. providing it is the manual that is for the radio.. that is why they make manuals for that particular radio a 1-1 to a 1-2 swr rating is really good providing you have no saturation on the internal filter. over saturation due to swr being set too high will eventually burn out the finals of a radio
i have delt with radio's for about 17 years now so i really suggest consult the users manual and always use only a authorized dealer for that particular radio just like my cobra 2000 i am not going to send it to a shop that just does radios i want a authorized cobra dealer ok i hope that this really helps ok please dont forget to give this solution a rate for me it helps me out so i can continue to help out others like yourself.
best regards

A k 40 magnetic antenna has high swr and wire and everything looks fine

The K40 is known to fail after that many years in service when moisture gets into the coil it causes it to change it resonance freq. and hence the higher SWR. Buy and new antenna and enjoy 10 years is way to long for an antenna to last.

How can I fix SWR's spiking and staying spiked?

Turn the squelch all the way down to the point that you can hear the hissing from the speaker, when you release the transmit button on the mic you should hear the noise from the speaker and at that point the EXTERNAL METER should not be showing anything. IF it is then the radio is not stopping transmission when you release the microphone button. Instead of letting go of the microphone button, try unplugging it and see if it does the same thing. Also to note the SWR that you are showing when transmitting is not that high. Also can you post the make and model of the SWR meter that you are using?

Cb antenna warning

If your readings are below 0.5 with a dipole that is a excellent swr reading, most fall in the area of 2.0 or higher, you will not harm your RF output transistor, if you are getting antenna warnings see if you can recalibrate it.

I just took my cobra 29 outta my big truck to put in my pickup. when it was in my truck it worked great i installed a 5 1/2 ft wilson trucker antenna on pickup it has a good ground i ran new rg58au coax....

You seem to have a short or an open circuit . Could be a PL259 connector problem, the ant. is defective and can possibly be a bad ground. Try to add an extra GND. from the ant. base to a central GND. point...This will include the power neg. lead from the radio.
PLS E. Note: If the O/P POwer shown when you key up to check SWR is higher than usual this
will indicate a definate ant. problem................GOOD LUCK and have fun learn'n ! ! !

I can't get the swr value close to 1 it's over 3 what am i mising

Several things are working against you.
1 Antenna location= Needs to be in CENTER of car or truck, and high. no grounded metal can be next to the element (the hot/positve part of the antenna)

2 the only way to really ground the antenna is by having a flat metal ground plane under the antenna. DC grounding does NOT do this, that is a misunderstanding.

3 make sure you use a tunable antenna. I have found the wilson's to be very easy to tune and performe very well, for a base loaded antenna.

4 in short a wilson or k40 magnet mount placed on the very top of the roof in the center will have a perfect ground plane. Then shorten or lengthen the steel whip to ajust your SWR's. You will get the best results this way. This is the ONLY way to achevie good performace.

5 I will say this the absoulte best antenna is the 102"steel whip, if you got the clearnce and dont mind it hitting tree limbs put it on a big magnet mount with a spring at the base and youll have a perfect antenna. But the wilson is shorter and easier to tune.

Can't pick up or receive at all

Na. Hes probably got the RF gain all the way down. If it were an SWR problem he would see the red light, and people most likely would not be able to hear him, and he would hear other people.

Turn you RF gain all the way up and leave it there. There is no need to turn it down unless you are trying to not hear any one far away at all or on a fox hunt.
