Change starter rope

If you can get the housing off where the pull string is then you should see the spool where the string was attached. There shouldbe a screw or small nut holding the spool on. First cut a piece of rope the same lenghth & diameter as the original I use nylon cause it holds up well to the oil and gas. Second cut off the remaining old rope, and with a screwdriver or socket unwind the spool until it is at it's maximum. Third, rethread the new rope through the same holes and slowly let the tention off the socket or screwdriver untiul the new rope is rewound on the spool. Attach the old handle and that should do it.
Hope this helps

I recently acquired a vintage underwood 315 typewriter. I bought new ribbon, 2 spools black. However when I put the spools on I cannot get the screws to do up as nothing comes far enough up the spools to...

Dear Pat,
I also own Underwook 315 typewriter and can understand your problem well. Probably you are not using the right spool. The height of the spool is causing problem for you. Please check the height of the spool which should be exactly 1.5 cm. If the one you are having is more than 1.5 cm height then get it changed. Hope it should work thereafter.

How to wind a pull rope

Thread the rope into the spool and knot the end, pull a 6 to 8 inch bit of slack from between the spool and the outer cover and let the rope set into the small indentation on the outside of the spool. Rotate the spool with rope attached and sitting in the notch in the opposite direction of recoil until sufficient tension is achieved, pull slack back through feed hole in cover and allow the spool to draw the rope into the spool, now attach the handle.
the notch in the spool is there to allow you to spin the spool without twisting the rope or having it bind on the cover.

The starting cord has broken and I need to make repairs . I would like some guidence

Take the housing off for the pull rope. Inside you'll find a spool. Take that off and underneath you'll find a spring. Replace the pull rope and connect it to the spool like the old one is. With the handle outside of the case run the rope through the pull rope hole then attach it to the spool. Wind all but a foot or so of the new rope back onto the spool. The spring will have a way of attaching to the case and to the spool. Attach the springs to the case. There will be a notch cut into one side of the spool. You need to lay the rope into this notch and then place spool back into the case at the same time attaching the spring to the spool. Don't worry about tensioning the springs. Once the spool is back in you need to start winding up the spool in the direction that tightens the spring. You'll need to make about 5-8 rotations depending on the length of the rope. At this point, position the notch in the spool even with the hole where the pull rope enters the case. Pull on the pull rope handle until you pull the slack rope back through the notch and outside the housing. Then release the rope and the slack should be pulled back inside the housing and wrapped around the spool. Here is a video on changing a pull rope on a lawn mower. The idea is basically the same.

I am trying to replace the cord on my mower, but the cord wont spring back in when I attempt to start it. Please help

the spring below the cord 'spool' must be wound tight before new cord is attached.disconnect cord, wind spool in the direction cord would pull it when starting until it stops & hold it there[spring is wound] release it enough to align & attach cord.release spool & allow it to wind cord onto spool.replace cover.

Broken recoil start on tecumseh 6.5 hp

broken cord? remove bolts holding recoil housing.lift housing straight up,you may have to wiggle it a bit.turn housing over, remove any cord thats left, note how & where it connects to the spool.wind the spool [and consquently the spring under it]in the direction the cord would turn it as pulled when starting.hold spool tight.thread new cord through hole in housing.let spool turn back just enough to attach new cord.hold cord & housing, let spring "re-coil" cord slowly.check for smooth operation.replace housing.you may need to pull cord slightly to align 'square' shaft w/hole in spool.only after you are satisfied with the operation of it adjust length of cord by pushing excess cord through the handle, tie a new knot, then cut off excess,if any.

There is one motor and two belts - one belf for each ribbon spool. It's possible the belts are the problem, but it sounds more like it's the ribbon spindle itself. The spindles contain clutches, and when the clutches bind up the spindles don't want to turn. Sounds like you need a new ribbon spindle.

INSTALLING CORRECTION TAPE ON A BROTHER SX4000

1) Use the [SPACE BAR] or [BACKSPACE] to move the carrier to the center of the platen.
2) Open the top cover
3) Remove the cassette ribbon, if installed
4)Pull off both spools, pressing against the correction tape with your thumbs. Bring it back to a position parallel with the platen, and lift it up and out.
5)Pass the new tape through the left guide, behind the ribbon guide, and out through the right guide. The rough (sticky) side of the tape should face the platen.
6) Attach the feeder spool to the pin on the left
7) Attach the take-up spool to the pin on the right
8) Turn the take-up spool counter-clockwise until a small amount of white tape has wound around it.
9) Replace the cassette ribbon and close the top cover.
10) Press [CODE] + [RESET] to move the carrier to the previous position.

Broken starter cord lawn mower #944.368300/craftsman

Please note ! patients is required with this one !
Hi, remove the recoil top cover with the recoil attached. ( DO NOT TAKE OUT THE SPOOL OR YOU COULD HAVE THE SPRING GET YOU IN THE FACE)
Remove old cord.
With your new cord lace it through the recoil spool centre hole with a knott on the end.
now depending if the recoil winds in clockwise when spool is facing you wind the cord around it a few times by turning the spool clockwise,
Then put the cord in the notch at the side of the spool & wind the spool & cord anticlockwise about twice the number of turns of cord (this should tension the spring).
Take your end of the cord & lace it through the hole outside of the casing & fit you pull handle.
But hold the spool firmly untill the cord has a good knott on the end of it.
(Sometimes I see the guys here putting a loop in the cord to stop it sliping in while they tie a knott on the end of the handle.)
