My wife wanted to replace our Kohler low boy with a self closing seat. We got a Westport whisper close with unlock-able hinges for easy cleaning. I followed the above advice to use brute force to yank out the Kohler bolts. I then used a hacksaw to cut the new plastic seat bolts so that they would not extend past the thickness of the porcelain. I drilled the plastic bolts thru so that a small drywall toggle bolt would fit thru. Use a washer to prevent it from pulling thru, screw on the toggle and cut off excess screw length so it does not bottom out inside the cavity. Insert the assembly in the hole and tighten. Snap on & lock the Westport seat and you are good to go!

I have the same low boy where the bolts are inside the hollow body of the toilet. I called Kohler customer service and was told to use brute force to yank the toilet seat out. My husband suggested using a saw to cut the bolt but he hasn't done it yet. He wants to replace all our Kohler low boys which constantly leak becos of poor design of handle and flapper. The handle pulls the flapper slightly to the side when you flush. And the flapper lip being a tiny bit too small, if it doesn't sit just right, the toilet leaks. We've replaced one already with a Toto and love it. Too bad that Kohler isn't trying to fix the problem as I see many many online posts with the same problem and recommendation to replace the Kohler with Toto or somethng else.

The bolts are inside the tank. Hard to find, but they are in the front of the tank. After you take off the seat, if you shine a flashlight in the tank, you will be able to see that. Put the seat with screws in the hole and feel around for the screw and then screw the bolt on.

You may have to use a really neat tool and that is aunt splitter. You can get it at O Reilly's auto store or any of those stores. That should remove it.

Stuck kohler toilet seat

most modern toilet seats are removed by opening plastic tabs on the upper rear of the seat and turning the screws counter clockwise while holding the retaining nuts underneath the bowl.there has to be access and if not ,you could drill them out from the top using a small drill bit and slowly working your way up to bigger bits till the heads of the bolts are removed.

Wrap a putty knife with a wash cloth, and push it between the toilet ceramic surface and the plastic hinge for the seat. Wedge it in there. Now try unscrewing the hinge screw. This provides back pressure against the hidden nut on the other side and may let you successfully remove the screw.

I tried to unscrew a toilet seat on a lowboy now the screws won't screw or unscrew.

If the screws won't turn either way, they're probably "cross-threaded" or stripped. You'll have to unscrew them with force. I'd use a ratchet and socket on an extension (you might want to use a deep socket, since the bolts often extend an inch or two past the nut).

Once you get them off & can remove the seat, head to the hardware store or Home Depot & pick up a new set of bolts & nuts. They're very inexpensive. When installing them, make sure that the nuts screw onto the bolts with finger pressure alone, before taking a wrench or pliers to them.

If using force to unscrew them ends up damaging the toilet lid/seat assembly (this is the worst-case scenario), then you'll have to spring for a new toilet seat. The up-side of this is that new seat/lid assembly come with the screws and nuts, and - depending on what you want - can cost as little as $15 for an "economy" model, and up to $30-35 or so for a "deluxe" model.

Kohler will try to sell you $46 anchor bolt kit 84999 & also there special tool. You should expect that for a $400 toilet.

Try this instead:
1. Use 1/8" drill bit and drill and drill around the bolt until the anchor material can be removed.
2. Carefully clean hole with 11/32 drill to remove all remaining acchor material.
3. Go local hardware store & buy a 10 - 32 3/8"X3/4" rubber expansion plug (make certain threaded part is brass & has shoulder on 1 end), a 10 - 32X1.5" Phillips bolt and couple of small fender washers fit the seat.(about $4 for 2)
4. Assemble carefully not to over tighten and crack the porcelain.

Hope it helps

They might be expanding fasteners that only need access from the top. Did you pop off the caps on top and loosen the screws with a screwdriver?
