Amana air unit does not kick in, compressor hums

Hi Bowmunster,
Sounds like it could be a couple of things - the run capacitor could have failed or the compressor has seized - having said that a wire could have burnt off the compressor terminals
Good luck

I have a a old Gibralco compressor when i cut it on it starts fine when it reaches desired pressure it stops and restarts until i kicks the breaker what can i try

i suspect that the start/run capacitor is faulty or the centrifugal switch in the back of the motor is faulty

have an accredited electrician check the motor , capacitor and the pressure control switch
the air leak at the head is a faulty non return valve in the compressor line to the tank
available at good tool shops for around $60.00

Air Compressor trips breaker under load. If I remove the belt the motor runs fine, spins freely as does the compressor pump. With the tank pressure empty, the compressor starts and runs fine. When it...

Most people recommend replacing the motor capacitor in this situation, since a faulty cap will reduce the starting torque. But in my case the check valve was the culprit - there was too much back pressure on the head.

Air compressor on Heil air conditioner is humming but not kicking in

Capacitor Failure Symptoms are sometime harder to identify without the right tools and expertise. Capacitors can be found in several different sizes and shapes. There may be one or multiple capacitors included in your ac with regards to the design. While the most popular capacitors are the types found on circuit boards, the ones most associated with air conditioning will be the bigger capacitors that assist start and run your motors. There are several motors present in an conditioner and heater systems:
  1. Compressor Motor Run Capacitor: Here is the most popular capacitor that fails. Most of the time these are duel capacitors, which means that there are 2 capacitors built into one. A duel capacitor will have three terminals on the top where a single capacitor will simply have two terminals on top.
  2. Outside Fan Motor Run Capacitor: That is the smaller capacitor found with or part of the Compressor Motor Capacitor. It helps start and run the outside fan that blows air through the outside coils.
  3. Indoor Blower Motor Run Capacitor: Similar to the outdoor fan motor capacitor, it is a small, single (two terminals) capacitor that will help start and run the indoor blower motor.
  4. Start Capacitor: Some models include an auxiliary start capacitor that helps jump start the motors. Most are found on the compressor. These are less common.

You may need to get that checked out.

Tech 2000 just quit. The problem is the outside unit. I cannot get it to start when I manually push the contactor. No fan and no compressor. Unit just hums for a couple of seconds and then no hum. ...

Sounds like a shorted capacitor. THe capacitor is located right beside the contactor. Looks sort of like a batter. Probably has 3 posts on top. If its shorted it usually will look pregnant or swollen. A capacitor is not very expensive. You can get one at any air cond supply house.

My air conditioner has stop working its blowing air inside but the fan is not spinning outside .....

If the fan is not running is the compressor not running also...if neither is running the possible reasons are 1..no power to outside unit...2..bad contactor on outside unit.is this buzzing if it is this indicates no power...3 bad capacitor,do both compressor and fan humm then quit humming and hum some more...4 high pressure switch has shut unit down because fan wasnt running if compressor was running but not fan....if your unit has this there will be a manual reset button where the lines come out of unit...if compressor was running and fan was not...1 bad fan...2 bad capacitor.. if you do not have any electrical knowhow i would recommend calling a hvac tech to come and fix unit...Thanks

The outside unit started ratteling. It cools and then just runs like a fan. We replaced the capacitor. The pressure is good on both valves.

It sound like your compressor is going out. If the ratteling is a hard shaking rattle followed by the compressor kicking off the compressor is overheating and an internal fuse is kicking it off it will reset but if this is the problem and you have replaced the compressor capacitor and not the small capacitor for the fan.(unless yours is the 3 wire it works both) Check your voltage and make sure you have at least 208v should be closer to 220v then your compressor is bad. sorry

Air on heat pump not cool outside unit humming but not kicking on

This could be an inoperative condenser fan.System will kick off on high pressure without proper air flow. The hum indicates voltage is present. Providing the fan motor is not locked up and will spin,Check your run capacitor which helps boost the motor voltage initially and will get it turning. If the cap is good, you may be faced with motor replacement....good luck

Compressor on my RV coleman ac unit bogging down

Take a look at your start capacitor. This the capacitor that kicks the compressor over when it tries to start. If the capacitor is bad, it cannot kick the compressor back over after the first cycle because the head pressure has not evened out yet. It is located in the upper unit on the side panel in a small box. Be careful, highly charged capacitors can zap you if you are not careful. Disconnect power and touch across the terminals with a meter or a screwdriver to discharge the capacitor.

Hope this helps,

Jeff
