USB device not recogniszed. The device has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it

You may need USB drivers to recognize the USB drive, especially if it's an older copy of Windows. I would check with the manufacturer for drivers if that's the case. Maybe try it in another machine to make sure it's not defective too.

Hi...i have windows 7 home & when i insert my 4 gb into the usb it says that "this computer has malfunctioned & windows does not recognize it". it says to click on message to solve, but...

the issue maybe the power on the motherboard is not have enough power to fully recognize the drive and read it. try looking in the device manager and see if several devices are using the same driver orconnector on the MB. see if this helps. Might try to open case ( pc or Laptop?) and unplug one of the usb cables and see if then -win 7 recognizes and comes on up. hope helpful... I had simular problem with my costum biult unit.

just because it says it doesn't recognise it doesn't mean it won't work. Plus if it's a device needing drivers you should download and install the drivers first then attach the usb cable. Go to the manufacturers website and find the drivers for the product downloading and installing the proper ones for the version of windows you have.

Also if you had listed what it was.... make and model could've given you a link to the drivers

Ipod classic

For it to recongnize, maybe try:
1: go to control panel
2:add hardware
3:connect your hardware device and click "yes i have connected the hardware"
4:scroll down and select install new hardware device
5:select install hardware that i manually select from a list
6:scroll down to windows portable devices
7:and choose MTP device
this should make it so your ipod is now recognised by the computer

Tried the solution you offered for c240....

Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Printers and Other Hardware --> System --> hardware --> device manager --> right click on the usb port that is malfunctioning (should have a red or yellow exclamation by it), right-click it and click on Update Driver

If that fails, try another USB port on the computer to see if you have more success
