The plungers are supposed to be up and turned to the side, so that the water may flow through them when the pump is on.

Hope this helps.

Tip

Backwashing A Sand Filter with A Push/Pull Slide Valve or Multiport Valve

Lots of people are first time pool owners and pool professionals forget to teach these "newbies" about the simplest aspects of pool ownership.

One of the biggest questions we receive from new homeowners is "How do I go about backwashing my sand filter exactly?"

It doesn't matter if you have a Hayward, Pentair, Jandy, Sta-Rite or any other number of Sand Filters on the market they all utilize the same basic valves for backwashing; a push/pull slide valve or a multiport valve.

To backwash with a multiport valve:
1) Shut off pump motor.
2) Press down on valve handle, rotate valve from FILTER to BACKWASH position.
3) Roll out any backwash hose or open any waste line valves.
4) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
5) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
6) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
7) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to RINSE position. Run on rinse for 15 - 25 seconds.
8) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to FILTER position.
9) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
10) Roll up backwash hose so the dogs use it as a chew toy.

To Backwash a sand filter with a slide valve:
1) Shut off pump motor, roll out backwash hose.
2) Twist to unlock plunger T-handle, push or pull(depending on manufaturer) the plunger 2" - 3".
3) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
4) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
5) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
6) Shut off pump motor and push T-handle back down into locked position.
7) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
8) Roll up backwash hose.

Now you are a backwash Guru!

My plunger valve for the outflow hose broke. What can I do until I can get another one

Just remove the plunger assembly and hook the hose directly to the nut on the outside of the pool wall.

Saltwater pump keeps reading low flow...but water is flowing throught it...have already ckd the flow sensor..the filter pump seems to not sound the same as it did before the new filter went in...pool only...

sounds like air lock
Start by closing your plungers
now get the cartridge out and drain the lower bleeder screw
put filter back in and the cover ring
now open the top bleeder screw on top of the cartridge cover
open the other bleeder screw on the pump itself if there is one if not go right to opening the plunger that discharges the water
When water start coming out of the bleeder on the cap open the intake plunger
wait 5 seconds then turn your filter on
wait 1 minute then close all bleeders
This should do it

My pump always says low flow, what do i do?

Hello,
Start with closing your plungers.
Now drain your filter with the bottom bleeder and clean your filter by blowing it out between each fold
now blast out the flow sensor with the hose and make sure it pivots freely
Put it back together now put your cartridge back in and intall the ring
close bottom bleeder all of the way
now open any other bleeder just a few turns usually 1-2 more depending on model of pump
now open the plunger that is the out put
wait until the water flows through the bleeders
now open the inlet plunger
turn on pump and wait 1 minute then close the bleeders
This should get all of the air out

Our pool pump keeps shutting down

the pump is not functioning correctly, it should run constant, and is only controlled by the switch. are you by any chance running this pump off of an extension cord, because that can cause this symptom. an large draw such as a pump compounded by the voltage drop of the cord can cause the motor to overheat and shut down sporatically.

Pool pump intex 51 pumps water but return flow is low

if you cartridge is completly clean then start by disconecting the out tube that goes to the pump housing
sometimes debris gets caught there entering your pump.
a little hair causes other things to back up

once you are satisfird that those 2 things are ready then close it all up and open the bleeder cap on top of the cartridge holder

Now let water in from the suction side
when water starts coming out of the bleeder cap then open the return side
Now turn on the puimp
let it run for 20 seconds and then close your bleeder

Should be working fine after that.

dont forget to leave the bleeder cap alone on the bottom of the canister unless you are draining the water from the canister to clean it. As soon as you are done close it back up

Is the intex 4000 pump any good.... do you lots filters...

I have the new 4000GPH pump and its awesome! The pump itself needs modifying just a bit. As for your pool, get rid of the plunger valves. They restrict the flow by about 1000GPH or more. There is a plastic grate in the inlet side of the pump. I just took a small file and sharpened the leading and trailing edges to smooth things up. The biggest thing is with the plunger valves. I modified some PVC fittings so I can use 1.5 inch ball valves. When my pump starts up, you see the water moving. I no longer have problems with **** settling to the bottom of my pool. Oh, and it will run an automatic cleaner with ease.
I dont recommend using the 400GPH pump with hoses smaller than 1.5 inches as there will be too much pressure and is likely to cause problems.
