Question about Electrolux Epic 6500 Vacuum

Full Bag Shut-off Comes on With New Bag and No Hose

My Epic 6500 has a new bag installed and I get the full bag indicator light when I try to run it even without the hose. There must be some current draw sensor that shuts down the motor. Is this something I can fix or alternatively a shop can fix? I've tried adjusting the sensitivity sensor and in the past this has worked, but not this time.

Thank you

The control valve has gone bad. This is the dial that you move on the top of the vacuum that has little indents on it.
You cannot do anything to bypass this problem from outside the machine.
This is not a repair that you can make yourself. You should look in your local yellow pages for Aerus (new name for electrolux) under vacuum cleaners, or go to www.aerusonline.com and find your local dealer. It is not too expensive to have fixed, it is a common issue with later model electroux vacuums.

You can try a test to see if it the valve. Remove the bag from the vacuum, look at the back of the bag holder near the motor, in the upper right or left depending on your model. You will see a very small hole 1/16 or an inch or so. Put a piece of tape of some sort to close off the hole. Replace the bag, turn on the vacuum, if it is a bad valve, the tape will override the bag full action, and the vacuum will run.

It is not advisable to run the vacuum this way since it will overheat, damage the thermostat, and can destroy the motor. A motor will cost over $200.00, the valve can be replaced for a lot less….

LSAYS I NEED NEW BAG, PUT IN NEW BAG & STILL LIGHT WILL NOT GO OUT & VACUUM WILL NOT TURN ON

Although this generally indicates that the bag is full, it may be caused by other problems. If you have fine dust in your area, the bag may seem like it's not full, but the pores in the bag are clogged so the vacuum will shut off as if the bag is full. This can be partially solved by setting the dial on top to the smallest dot.
The problem could also be caused by a dirty afterfilter. This filter is located beneath the tool caddy on the back of the machine. Access is gained by pressing the tab on the back of the machine and lifting the caddy. If dirty, replace it. If you don't have a replacement, check to see if the vacuum will run without it. It should if there is not other problem causing the vacuum to not run.
Third, try detaching the hose, turn the machine on to see if it runs. If it does, place your hand over the in port. If the vacuum shuts off, the problem is most likely a broken, worn, or clogged Control Valve Assembly. This is the part the dial connects to. This is a problem that should only be repaired by an authorized Aerus Electrolux service tech. If you have been using generic "Made to fit Electrolux" bags, the motor and interior of the machine should be cleaned. This is worth doing as there should be a long "life" ahead for the vacuum. Periodic maintenance should be done.
You can find the nearest store using the below link.
It could also be caused by loose connections, worn or broken switch/es, broken wires, or bad motor. This can be narrowed down at the shop.

Bag was full, changed it, the unit now turns off

Try dialing the control valve to the mid way position. If the unit still shuts down with the bag full light on you have a damaged control valve under the dial on the top of the vac.
This valve failure is common in this model and can only be repaired by someone with original AERUS Electrolux repair parts, generally at an AERUS repair shop.

With a new bag -after turning vacuum on, it shuts down

This vac is prone to a control valve failure with the exact symptoms you describe. There is a dial valve on top of the machine designed to regulate how full the bag will get. The valve which sits underneath the dial on the vac likely has a broken plunger and will need to be replaced. Take it to an AERUS Electrolux dealer / shop for an experienced tech to work on.

What is the symbol above the "change bag" symbol?

When the bag is full, the "full bag" light will come on and will turn itself off. Replace bag (make sure there is no clog) and try again.
Hope this helps.

Vacuum shuts off, bag light on, runs fine without hose connected

I'm not sure if I understand your problem completely, but if it is your full bag indicator that is coming on, even with a new bag, it's probably your control valve. These can be replaced by your dealer. When working correctly, the control valve should trigger the off switch when the differential pressure gets too great between the front of the bag housing and the area behind the bag. When it goes bad, it will indicate that you need to change your bag, even when you don't. Good Luck!!

Bag Full Sensor

Opening The Unit:
Remove the hose, open the door, and remove the bag. Making sure that the door is open wide enough, pull the rubber strip on each side of the canister toward the opening until they are completely removed. With a little shifting, you will now be able to pry open the top cover from the bottom. Remove the obstruction sensor hose so that you can completely separate the halves.
Note: If the strips will not move toward the front, the you will have to slide them off to the rear. You will need two screwdrivers to pry open the top rear of the unit far enough to release the back cover.

Locating The Switch:
The "trip" switch is located on the inside top cover under the power button. The trip switch is activated by the sensor valve next to it.

Electrolux Epic 6500SR Full Bag sensor working, Does not Reset properly

The problem was a sticking switch that was not being reset. The vacuum on/off switch mechanism is comprised of two switches. One is the main switch that turns the vacuum on and off. The second is a shut off switch that gets tripped when the full bag sensor is engaged. This second switch is supposed to get reset when you push the on/off switch on the outside of the machine. The full bag shutoff switch was stiff and it, therefore, was taking a couple of presses of the on/off switch to move the shutoff switch back into the running position.

Either there is something wrong with your switch. Which it doesnt sound like it. Take it to your dealer or call another one it sounds like the control valve needs to be replaced. I am a dealer 1-866-966-9350.
