How to recover formatted drive?

I just create a problem where i accidently formatted my drive. Well, not accidently... When trying to convert GPT to MBR, the process is interrupted. I want to use Windows 7 for classic BIOS mode and Windows 10 for UEFI mode in separate drive. And the process is interrupted and my files is lost. Is there a way to recover the partition without copying all files around 1TB? GPT is not supported by EaseUs Parition Recovery Wizard.

I met a similar problem with you. But fortunately my friends recommend Minitool partition wizard to me. It support GPT as well as MBR, and it has partition recovery feature, which may help you out of the problem.

It's a good habit to create a backup image of all the important data. Once you meet any disasters, you can restore all data backup. Consider aomei backupper as a solution. AOMEI Backupper Standard 4 0 6FREE

SOURCE: how to recovery the system from recovery partition

Did you know you only get ONE shot at creating a recovery disc? And most of the time it is garbage, just like Vista.

He tried to put XP on it and failed? weird.

A couple things you can do...

1. Get your hands on a Vista disk. If you know anyone that works in IT, you can borrow a Vista disk. Do a complete fresh install. Use your "Product Key" and you will have your own Licensed, perfectly legal version of Vista.

2. Get yourself a copy of XP. Delete all partitions, then create a new one. Don't try to save that Vista recovery partition...it's toast. I recommend XP, but I'm a dinosaur.

If you know anyone that works in IT, you can borrow

SOURCE: how tp convert a GPT hard drive to a MBR hard drive?

Boot off your Vista disc and go to the Recovery options. Once inside there access Command Prompt (It is a choice in the Menu) type Diskpart.exe and hit enter. Then type Help you will see many options.

What you want to do is type 'List Disk' select the Disk you wish to convert and so forth. Basically the way to convert from GPT to MBR is in there. You can also clean all data off the disk from inside Diskpart and start over with MBR.
Commands to Convert Disks
convert mbr [noerr]

Use the convert mbr command to set the partitioning style of the current disk to MBR. The disk may be a basic disk or a dynamic disk but the disk must not contain any valid data partitions or volumes.

convert gpt [noerr]

Use the convert gpt command to set the partitioning style of the current disk to GPT. The disk may be a basic or a dynamic disk but it must not contain any valid data partitions or volumes. This command is valid only on Itanium-based computers; it may be unsuccessful on x-86-based computers.

convert dynamic [noerr]

Use the convert dynamic command to change a basic disk into a dynamic disk. The disk may contain valid data partitions.

convert basic [noerr]

Use the convert basic command to change an empty dynamic disk to basic.

Is my WD My Book 4064-7-5107-020 using MBR partition

This does not depend on the housing of the drive, but on the way the disc has been formatted.

To check (on a Windows computer) : Right-click on "My PC", select "Manage" : this opens a "Computer Management" new window ; in the lower part of the window, right-click on the label part of the disc you want to check (the place with the capacity) : one of the lines will say either "convert to GPT" (if the disc is MBR), or "convert to MBR" (if the disc is GPT).

P.S.: the wording of the messages could slightly differ depending on your version of Windows)

Tecra A11 can't see all of 3TB drive

Support for Disk Drives Beyond 2.2 TeraBytes (TB) and 4K Advanced Format Sectors

Most legacy systems built before 2011 have a traditional PC BIOS. This type of BIOS uses a Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR Partitions can define a disk drive capacity up to 2.2TB. Windows operating systems that boot from an MBR are therefore limited to 2.2TB per MBR. A 3TB disk drive in a legacy BIOS and Window system will need a DiscWizard device driver to access the full capacity of a 3TB disk drive. Two partitions will be necessary because of the MBR limitation. The device driver mounts the capacity above 2.2TB with another MBR which looks to the system as a second virtual "physical" device.
GUID Partition Tables (GPT) can define drives larger than 2.2TB. You can use GPT today on any Windows 10/ 8.1/8/7 and Vista system as a non-booting data drive. Windows can only boot a GPT partition on a new type of BIOS called UEFI.
UEFI BIOS desktop systems are new since 2011. Windows 10/8/8.1/7 64-bit and Vista 64-bit operating systems support booting from UEFI and GPT without the need of a non-Microsoft device driver. This is the Windows native solution for booting a 3TB drive to a single partition.
Quick facts about Windows and 3TB drives:

  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista support GPT 3TB single partitions
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can only boot GPT on systems with UEFI BIOS
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can mount a GPT non-booting data drive
  • Intel RST device drivers before v10.1 do not support 3TB disk drives
  • Windows systems with Legacy BIOS and MBR boot drives are limited to 2.2TB partitions
  • Windows XP does not support GPT
  • Windows XP sees a 3TB drive as 800GB on boot or data drives
  • DiscWizard software can install a device driver which opens the full capacity of a 3TB. You can use it to create a second partition for the capacity above 2.2TB

My hard drive is only working on my mac laptop and not on my windows laptop how can i get it to work on both

The most likely reason you cannot see your hard drive on your Windows laptop but can on your Mac, is that the drive has been formatted for GPT which is only supported on Windows Vista or 7 or above, not on XP

See the Microsoft article on GPT here and FAQ's on GPT here

My external hard drive cannot read by my PC at all ,I connect it on Mac os x G4 and i could reformat it nicely,so why on PC.

Assuming that your PC is running Windows XP then this does not support GPT drives which are created when the drives are used in a Mac computer - you would either need to upgrade to using Windows Vista or 7 which do support GPT or else do a low-level format of the drive to completely remove the GPT formatting data by writing zero's into the first 100 sectors of the drive - this will destroy all data on the drive! GPT = GUID Partition Table which allows for up to 128 partitions on a single drive....See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302873 for detailed information on GPT
