Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

I have sound but no video..(there is no RROD)

I moved to a new house and hooked up the 360 and it came on like usual for about 10 min then the picture went out(lights are all green and the audio is fine) .I thought it might have been the AV cables so I called a friend and he brought over his system and cables and I used his cables and still no picture..we hooked up his system and it worked so its not the TV....I have never had any problems prior to this...its out of warranty (got it 1st day of launch) I'm thinking the GPU might have come loose during the move,is that a possibility? Would an xclamp fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a friend with the same problem. No video, just audio, used different cables and such like you did. Ended up being the GPU just as you mentioned. Called in they said it wasn't under warranty.

My friend tried the Xclamp, but it didn't work. He ended up calling MS and found that if you told them you were troubleshooting a Red ring error on the phone with them, and then the video error happened they would grandfather in the replacement because it was a red ring error initially. Might try that.

Just bought a x-box 360s for my son for x-mas. The x-box will freeze up after 10 to 20 min of play and sometimes the light will be red and not green. we were told to get more memory to solve the problem so...

You just got ripped off. Who told you to get more memory? Red lights indicate hardware failure, not insufficient memory. in fact, this problem sounds suspiciously similar to the rrod on the original 360.

It green screens after 10 mins

This is a graphics processor unit (gpu) fault, the console will need stripping down and new heatsink compound applying to the chip, this is basically the same fix as rrod, so there are plenty of free guides on youtube, if you want to tackle this yourself.

No picture just sound.

I have two consoles that quit in 30 minutes of each other. the graphics chip is fried. go to www.xbox.com and file a repair ticket. you will get a tracking # to mail in the defective consoles.

Xbox has sound when turned on but no picture, yes it's connected to the tv and I got a new cable but still the same problem

Hi, when this happens, it is because your x-clamps need replacing (same thing as if you had RROD). This is the beginning of the RROD. I personally have done at least 30(ok maybe 28) of these and not have had any of them come back. And according to the people who ive done these for the picture quality is also improved.

Graphics glitch after 10 mins playing

This could be from you GPU starting to overheat. When they get too hot the start running "dots" across the screen and then you get all kinds of pretty colors in the corners of your screen. Eventually you will lose your video altogether. The way to fix that is the same way you fix the RROD by doing the x-clamp replacement. I have done several of these and it fixed the problem and I haven't had any of them come back yet.

Xbox 360 has 4 flashing red lights when turned on.

usually the flashin 4 red lights is an indiction that your AV cables are not hooked up. Sounds like you have a hardware issue that needs to be looked at. You can always pull it apart and do the heat gun trick on the motherboard... but if your not comfortable doing that i would send it in or find someone who can fix it. Chances are, a solder joint failed with your A/V port.

Try using different AV cables if it works you need new cables. Chances are you will still have RROD after.

Sound with no picture

Have you looked at the side of the cable and made sure that the switch is set correctly? you have to select either HDTV of AV I believe. If that isn't the problem, try hooking it up through a different input on your television. I don't think it's your xbox because with any hardware failure, you would get the RRoD (red ring of death). I would definitely troubleshoot the TV. Try to hook up a regular DVD player in the input that your xbox is in and see if it works.
