Replace 105-1844 traction cable on toro mower #20017

I managed to get the old cable off. But I see no way to thread the new cable though the spring. There is very little space to work in near the transmission. even if I could get the spring off, I'd never get it reconnected ( the "U" at the end is .5 in long). Do I need to remove the transmission to get access to the spring? Must the stabilizer bar be removed to unblock the transmission? I've read on-line that this part wears out quickly, so there ought to be a simple way to replace it?? Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Phew! When I picked up the replacement cable it included an attached spring. I only loosened the stabilizer bar to swing it out of the way so that i could remove the old spring. It was slightly difficult to get the new spring attached in the restricted space, but it's done! :)

SOURCE: I have to replace the

Hi,

The black cover on the front of the mower is held on by couple of screws from underneath. You have to remove the cover which will give you access to where the cable connects to. Then use a pair of pliers to squeeze the end of the cable to disconnect it from its mounting hole. Now loosen the cable clamp, pull the cable downward to remove all the slack then push the cable jacket up 1/8" and secure with the cable clamp.

SOURCE: Replace the cable traction (part #105-1844)

I just replaced mine and it was a little difficult and took me roughly an hour to do. First, download the walk behind power mover drive systems at https://homeownersolutions.toro.com/portal/server.pt?space=CommunityPage&cached=true&parentname=CommunityPage&parentid=1&in_hi_userid=30166&control=SetCommunity&CommunityID=225&PageID=30031#manualsResultPage

While they do not specifically address replacing the cable, you can find out how they do it when replacing the drive belt. As I said, it took me about an hour and I just about had to remove the transmission and rear drive assembly in order to unhook the original cable. Good luck!

The contact point that grounds out the spark is not connecting. Take it apart back down to where you have access to the coil and check the mechanism and and the wire to ground out the spark.

How do you replace a drive cable on a toro recycler 6.5 hp.

Its a bit of a pain - but with ordinary tools, it can be done. Get the replacement cable first. You can see how the bottom spring wraps around the cable with a universal joint sort of arrangement. Remove the belt protector (three screws from the top deck; if you have a battery compartment, that will temporarily need to go. Release the old cable from the top and middle attachment points, then unhook the spring from the traction lever. You might need to destroy the old cable lock to the mower deck to remove the old cable. Remove the plastic cup next to the cable where it exits the mower deck. Replace parts in this order: New spring/cable to the traction lever, snap in plastic interface to mower deck, small plastic cup top cable attachment, then middle attachment. You might need to move the middle attachment after you give it a test run. Replace belt cover and battery compartment if necessary. A lot of steps but, except for a difficult fit to get the spring hooked up, nothing is really difficult. I paid about $30 for the replacement cable from a local dealer; Overpriced, but I wanted to get the job done today.

I have a self-propelled Toro Personal Pace lawnmower, Model 20022. Both rear wheels engage and rotate when I lift the rear wheels off the ground, but when I put the mower back on the ground, the right...

Routine maintenance is required on the drive gears on these Toro mowers and Toro doesn't tell anybody. Put a block under the rear end to lift the wheel off the ground. Remove the wheel. You will see the drive gear. VERY IMPORTANT: take good notes, pictures, etc..when dissasembling. Remove the outer snap ring retainer from the axle shaft. Next should be a thin washer. Remove the washer. Pay very close attention to the gear, as it has to go back on in exactly the same direction. Remove the gear. There is a slot in the axle shaft. Rotate the axle to have this slot pointed up. In the slot is a small key (rectangular piece of metal), remove the key. Under this key is a spring. It, and the key, is stuck in the axle slot, therefore not allowing the gear to drive the wheel. Dig out the key and spring, clean them and the slot. Put a dab of axle grease in the slot and reassemble. In my shop, this is part of a mower tune-up, and is recommended every 50 running hours. That is usually every other year for the average home-owner.
DO NOT TIP your mower over to do this repair. Mowers are just like cars, they like all 4 wheels to stay on the ground. Tipping a mower over can/will cause fluids to go places they aren't supposed to go.
This is a relatively simple repair and can be done with basic mechanical knowledge and basic tools.
Do the other side too, it needs it.
Good luck!
