Question about GE 31GT740 31" TV

1 Answer

GE 31GT740 clicks off and on

My 5-year-old GE 31GT740 turns on ok. Within a few seconds, it turns off by itself with a clicking noise, and a few seconds later, clicks on again. After a few cycles of "off" and "on", it stays off. It acts the same way whether I use the remote or manually turn it "on". Is it worth fixing? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, George

Re: GE 31GT740 clicks off and on

Dead, led flashing red/green at first, then going to red standby
Replace C604 (1000uF, 16v) elec. cap. It is in the decoupling circuit for the 5 volt supply
Reverts to standby from switch on via TV or Video
No 5v rail because FET MTP3055 o/c. (BUZ71 will do nicely)
Goes straight to standby, after a quick burst of power
Replaced R952 (39K), had gone slightly high

I own a GE 31gt740 and I heard a squealing noise a few times, but TV still worked. Then, I turned it on one day, heard the squealing noise, then saw a little smoke, some crackling, and no sound or picture....

I think that the problem of your tv is the flyback transformer. The noise you are hearing is the high voltage, it is leaking from the flyback transformer. The smoke you see may came from the flyback or the capacitor. To be sure to the problem, try to remove the back cover of your tv but be sure to unplug it. Try to plug it, then turn on your tv but you should turn of the light so you could see the high voltage that is leaking but be very careful when doing it.

I have a GE 31GT740 31" TV That turns itself off and then back on every few seconds. There is now a broken (dashed) white line that goes from the very top center of the screen to the right side. The...

I would be concerned with the vertical IC. This IC has pins that have separated from the board itself. You will note the area under the vertical IC is almost black. It will do no good to resolder this. You will need to replace the vertical IC with a new one. And be sure to replace those electrolytic capacitors near and next to the vertical IC. Bad grounds on the this IC will cause your TV to shut down. Also inspect the rest of the TV board. In some cases the retrace cap will always need resoldered! But please inspect all areas of this board for bad grounds and resolder as necessary! Good solid grounds will give you a dependable set. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!

Tv just clicks when turn on there's no picture or sound

The click is an indicator of a power relay that is activated when the power key is pressed, this eliminates the a stand by power supply problem, but there is still a power source missing, otherwise the click noise would be accompanied by another noise(static) when the h. circuit feeds th hv unit and powers the rest of the tv set. you could find an open fuse, usually blown by a shorted h.o.transistor which is a common failure with these sets. You could have it inpected by taking it to a tech, but a h.o. transistor plus labor would set you back around 150dolls, always a good idea to call first and try to get a guesstimate of what cuold be the final number. If your question was answer please your positive feedback this will help me.thanks!

The GE (actually RCA) 31GT740 uses the CTC203 series chassis. The first thing I would do is resolder the coil on the base of the horizontal output transistor and the pins of the horizontal drive transformer, as well as any other solder joints on the main PC board that look weak or cracked. 9 times out of 10 that cures the symptoms you described. If you do not have experience soldering parts on PC boards then have a qualified tech handle it for you.

Green Lines Horizontally

yeppers its a g2 control on the flyback thats gone or drifted out of alighnment or the flyback its self.Try turning the g2 control dowm till those lines fade. If they wont go away then you need someone to check the Picture tube or its componets driving the crt.
