My Panasonic DMC-LZ7 is not not recognized by computer when usb cable plugged in. It has always worked before and not is not.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

I have lumix dmc-lz7. Tonight I put a 2 gig sd card into my built in card reader , Dell pc and it didn't work and did not even show the drive on computer. Then, to check it out, I connected camera to usb...

maybe the card reader is not SD/SD HC compatible, the same problem occurs wiith the Memory Stick Pro/Duo of sizes 2GB or above in my Desktop Computer (Compaq) and not in my Notebook (Compaq) the card reader and the machine are newest and are compatible

Camera as a gift

Do you have a SD card reader? you could get the memory card out of the camera, and put the card in your cardreader.
you could also just use the usb cable, i suppose you have windows xp or vista, it should install automatically.
the software is for old versions of windows, and other os's.
