Question about Akai PT4298HD Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Common problems I've had my 42" HD for less than four years. After replacing the powersupply for $400 the convergence has now gone out. This is an extremely poorly designed and built TV. I recommend not throwing good money after bad -- get a better brand plasma and don't throw more money into a chaply made Korean TV.

Convergence is out

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I am unsure which model of TV I have. The manuel lists 4 HD 61Z585 HD-52Z585 HD-61Z575 HD-52Z575 The color is messed up. I know it is more than an adjustment. I am sure it needs a new part, just don't...

Hi,

From the information you have provided the problem is with the convergence. If you have gone into the menu and tried adjusting the focus/conversion after the TV has been on for an hour or more and the focus did not correct the problem the convergence ICs have failed and will need to be replaced along with a few defective resistors. If all the colors are incorrect a open fuse in the voltage supply to the amplifiers is possible. A TV repair company will normally charge about $350 for this repair if the ICs are the problem, less for the fuses. Small TV repair shops will normally charge less than large repair facilities. Convergence failure is a very common problem with this TV set. There could be other parts that are not within factory specs. The only way to be positive of the problem is to have the circuitry diagnosed by someone with the proper TV test equipment to determine what parts that are no longer within specs. A small TV repair shop will many times be less expensive than a large repair facility.

If you wish to repair it yourself and can solder, I will suggest that you to purchase a kit that has all the needed parts and detailed instructions for making the needed repair from :-

.When you get to the site using the link provided, choose TV repair kits, enter in the model number for your TV and select convergence repair kit.

I am sorry, you need to confirm the model number. There should be model number engrossed, might be back of the TV .

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Yamaha brick 400 watt stereo amp. Sound has gone muddy!

It sounds like you have lost a ground connection, It is possible this is in your connections to the input such as your input leads to the amplifier. Check very carefully the shield or negative connection at both ends of your leads (it could even be the brand or construction of the connector itself as some connectors use a mechanical joint between where the negative and ground is connected and the part that makes contact with the amps input terminals).

If this is not the problem, the next most likely is that an internal amplifier ground has been lost - this can happen if the speaker positive makes contact with the amplifiers input socket. You should use a multimeter to measure continuity between speaker negative terminal and the input ground terminal - this should read 10 ohms or less, if not you could open the amplifier and look for damaged cct board tracks etc.

If the problem has developed slowly (over weeks) you could be looking at faulty capacitors in various parts f the powersupply and main amplifier boards - replacing these is indicated if the amp is over 10 years old and or has been used in confined spaces allowing high ambient temperatures to occur.

Convergence problem red lines are out of wac on

Most of these sets use two STK-392-110 convergence IC's; both along with any open resistors around them need to be replaced and the set adjusted.

You can buy the chips on Ebay for less than 13 dollars(look for suburban electronics--Sewsale--they have the best price on these parts and give a 6 month warranty) if you are able to replace them yourself if not, look for someone in your area to do the job for you; this is the slow time of year for TV repair shops---some shops get 300 or more for this repair. I fix a lotof these smaller sets(42 etc) for 200 parts and labor.

Find someone and make sure BOTH IC's are replaced. If you have questions let me know here. I do this for free so if this was helpful give me a vote here.

Picture is distorted.. 3d like on rear projection tv.. see red, white, green colors now... help ;)

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1 - Failure in the convergence circuits. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

0667c5f.pngSOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed. Notice how dull the colors are and how white the screen looks. The screen may also look red, orange, dull, etc.

Hitachi ultrascan hd 42 in

The problem you are facing is a common problem in all rear projection TVs. It's called convergence. If you go into your menu there is an adjustment for it. if it doesn't move back into alignment then you have a more serious problem in the convergence circuit which will require replacement of components.
