lcd inverter are commonly found at the bottom of the LCD screen after you'd remove the edges cover. try to remove the VGA cable from the laptop and see if the screen will blink or flash.
If you only have half of a picture, usually top or bottom, then there is a problem with the upper or lower scan buffers. What is the make and model number and is it split top to bottom?
