Question about Mitsubishi VS-50607 50" Rear Projection Television

I have a Mitsubishi VS-50607 with a Code 24 Problem

I have a Mitsubishi VS-50607 Big Screen, built in 2000. During the past year or so, on occassion the unit would turn off by itself. This has progressively become worse, to the point that it very seldom goes on at all, and if it does, it only stays on for a very short period of time before turning off again.

I ran a code check and got a Code 24. I proceeded to remove the chassis and replace the C411 and C412 Electrolycic Caps located in the V Hold section. The TV turned on and actually stayed on for about an hour, but now it's back to the same old same old, either shutting off right after it is turned on, or if I'm lucky, it stays on for a minute or two. Each time I have unplugged the set for at least a few minutes so as to clear the code in order to turn the set back on.

It should also be noted that here is NO leakage from the CRT's down on the chassis circuit boards. When the TV does actually power up, the picture is clear. Usually before the TV turns off, the picture will turn into a blur RGB line across the screen, but I suspect this is due to the set possibly trying to turn itself off but doesn't entirely because the problem is just starting to act up.

I have a lot of electronic experience because of my work, although it doesn't involve TV repair. I just need to be guided as to what other area(s) should be looked at. I suspect a weak capacitor(s). Sometimes I've been lucky in that the set has stayed on for days or weeks, but that's not the case now which leads me to believe a cap has gotten worse.

Any help from you TV techs out there would be greatly appreciated. I am currently laid off and money is very tight, so a trip to the TV repair shop is not an option at this time.

Close inspection of the chassis reveals no overheated components, visible cracks in any of the PC boards or even cold solder joints, especially in the V Hold area. When I first powered up the set after replacing C411 and C412, I believe it stayed on for as long as it did because I had not had the set on or even plugged in for weeks prior to my attempted chassis repairs. I'm still thinking a bad cap, but I don't have a cap tester. Could this problem be in the power supply side of the board, such as with weak caps by the rectifier area?

I do believe that a weak cap is causing the problem, specifically, I suspect an electrolytic cap as the culprit. From reading many of the Code 24 complaints for this model and various models that share the same or similar chassis design, I was hoping that a tech who has Mitsu experience, might know where a common area to look is, or if it's better to just go ahead an replace some of the caps in particular spots. Again, my Code 24 problem is not unique to just my TV, so I believe that someone with experience on this model(s) has a fairly good idea of where to start looking, the same way an automotive tech or electronics tech(non TV) would know where to begin with certain model cars or electronic items with known problems. When it comes to capacitor problems, this is nothing new to Mitsubishi big screens.

WJ, what also concerns me about this chassis, is that one of the chassis boards uses surface mount technology. That would be the board where the Convergence IC's are mounted on. With the exception of the Convergence IC area, that's a very difficult board to work on and one that can easily be damaged, which is why I don't want to mess with it and was hoping that there's a common place on the DM/V Hold board that tech's often deal with in regards to repairing in relation to the Code 24, vertical problem.

Somewhere out there on this tech forum, is a tech with a lot of experience when it comes to Mitsubishi TV's. There are thousands and thousands of them with Code 24 problems, many of which you have repaired and can see a common denominator when it comes to what causes most of these Code 24 issues. So please, no vague answers, just point me in the right direction based on YOUR EXPERIENCE with this type of TV. Thanks!

If you read my description of the problem, I stated that the TV turns off. Therefore, there was no sound or video, just the famous blinking green light, the power relay clicking and that's it. I repaired the chassis last night by replacing capacitors C464 & C523, both 1000uf 50v, and C521 and C527, both 4700uf 35v. This was in addition to replacing the caps for C411 and C412 the previous day. My TV set is now alive and working flawlessly. I can turn the set on without any problems, turn it off, then come back later and turn it back on without fear of the set not powering up and instead giving off the blinking green light of death as before. After browsing the internet, I learned that in relation to the Code 24 problem, the now replaced capacitors are often the cause of the vertical circuit failure. The cost of 6 new capacitors was slightly less than $15. Repairing one's own TV set while laid off from work and living within one's means, PRICELESS!

Its just a condenser(capacitor) ..so just try to locate it ..from the image board..cause Im sure that all this time the sound its still on ...just carefully measure 'em all and locate it ...after that just change it with another one or try to put something similar on the same size.. I can not tell you the exact one cause Im not familiar with the model ...but I do had this problem with the concentrated horizontal (middle screen ) line ...and always was about this ....

I am wondering you the cap replacement worked for a short time and then those suddenly got bad due to another issue in your power supply?

Normally a bad cap would be the cause and that was what i was going to suggest you may want to check the FUSES and make sure there not weak and just slowly causing more issues within the caps.

TV's are a hard subject of repair on Fixya because I am not actually there looking at all the boards inside this TV. All I can do is suggest and give advise on what to look at next. I would suspect putting a higher cap on the voltage level not the macfiads keep the UF rating the same but upper the voltage a tad and make sure you using high quality caps. Also check fuses not the fuses that have the glass in them the blue ones that are soldered.

Also check solder joints for weak spots.

If you have any further questions please reply, If you like my suggestions please accept the solution.

Thanks for using Fixya.com

Hi,
Problem seems with electrolytic capacitors that got weak / dry.
Do you have repair manual / schematics to troubleshoot or test volts in circuits?
You can download service manual copy from HERE for free. Download all 11 parts / files and unzip it with WinRaR to get PDF file of repair manual. This will help you to check why protection is being activated causing shut down TV.
Good luck.

VS-50607 Mitsubishi code 24...replaced caps now code 22

Well, I don't know about your original problem but I can guarantee that 95% of the time when a Mits projection set gives a 2-2 code it's because the convergence output IC's are drawing too much current. Replacing the convergence output IC's usually fixes the problem.

Mitsubishi vs 50607

Good Day, gntjige73 & muse923;
Let make this short and sweet, code 24 means you have a vertical problem. Four common things can cause this:
1. Bad connections on the convergence IC's,
2. Bad cap's in b + to vertical circuit,
3. Bad connections/or failing vertical output IC,
4. Or fluid on the PC board, leaking from the crt's.
The companies you called DO NOT call them back, but call a factory authorized service dealer, they will help you, but always remember to get a written estimate before you proceed with the repair. Good Luck, big IRISH>

I'm not sure of the fix, but my manual says the 2-3 error code is due to Horizontal Deflection Failure. Hope this helps. I just uploaded my service manual, it should be available in 24 hours pending fixya's approval.

What is the life of a big screen tv?

Sounds like the veritical circuit has a bad capacitor. The cost is dependent on the servicers in your area. It can also be dependent on whether you take it to the shop or have a servicer come to your home. Look on a Mitsubishi website to find a servicer in your area.
