SOURCE: Poulan Pro 18.5 HP Intek engine trouble

Might be fludding..
If there is a bowl on the carb, pop it off and check the float.. Check for fluid inside the float. If the float is holding any fluid - its bad..
Srpay carb cleaner in there..
Clean the bowl..

Bent push rods are a function of the valve guide coming loose in the head. The valve binds and you end up with a bent pushrod. Fix: Replace head. $94.00

SOURCE: Can a novice replace a carburetor on a Briggs

Yes its pretty easy you can do it.Are you sure the carb is bad most of them just need a good cleaning .I would disassemble be careful there are some little parts in there and if you are careful and pay attention as you disassemble it you can just clean it .Go to auto parts store get a can of spray carb cleaner .remove bowl be careful the is a float in there a little square or round bellows .Slide the pin out and then the fuel loat pin underneate the float now take out any adjustment screws you can find and spray cleaner in every hole you can find several times and reassemble if idle or fuel mixture screws were removed a standard setting of 1 1/2 turns out from seated position is the norm and some adjustment may be needed once running either in or out till runs smooth.

How do I remove the horizontal shaft

the motor you are working on has a split block and you have to take the motor off and remove the bolts holding the two halves of the block apart. this motor doesn't have a separate removable head. it is cast as two pieces and in my opinion makes more work for some repairs. hope this helps

What is the compression lbs for a 18 hp brigg/stratton intek engine

Not sure where to get compression pounds for this, but let me refer you to the Briggs website for detailed product specs and power curves.
Intek can be twin or single sylinder.

For Twin....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-series-v-twin

For single....the are in 1/2 HP ratings but the link is below....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-with-xrd-single-cylinder

If further detail is required, I will need the model type and trim found on the valve cover.
