Try pressing F8 as it boots, and start Last Known Good Configuration or safe mode. (see here.)
'Please see your home support page here, from which you may access troubleshooting help for startup problems with your system. Especially, see here and here.
This MS article on xp may also prove helpful, as will this.
And here's a good general startup troubleshooter, if you want some options.

Computer won't do anything, keyboard does not light up, screen is blank

So there is not so much as a BIOS message on screen? Any beeps?
If there is no life at all, you have a CPU/motherboard failure. This may be direct or indirect (e.g. no power to MoBo). Check your connections.
Otherwise, your boot device may not be operating. This is usually a dead or disconnected HDD. Check that it is plugged in. Does it get warm? Can you feel any vibrations from it? It should spin even if your cpu is dead but MoBo is alive.

Compaq presario cq70 wont boot up

old Compaq (now HP)
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/

first screen died, now wont boot, to external VGA monitors.
Fn+F4, sure. the external command key. sure
ok VISTA, first time any one tells what OS is there, wow.
step one on all PCs lap or desk top is what,
does the screen show any text at all?
like Hit Esc to enter setup or BIOS>
we first see of BIOS is alive. it not the PC is DEAD.
zero text means DEAD PC> and NO BIOS means DEAD PC
so out comes that old useless LT battery.
useless as in , if its original its bad. most are.

you skipped step 1 here, (battery out)
and next fans work? and blow air, no lint packups. inside.
learn that PC's go dead, with overheat, can happen fast.

On boot up-no screen!

Either dead battery, So many software programs to load on startup that it takes a long time to get from the black screen to windows.

When you boot up continueally press I think f12 or f2 or f3 whatever on your computer to get to bios. In there you will see if its booting to cd or harddrive, if the battery is functioning correctly. You might get a better idea of the problem.

Compaq computer doesn't boot, no BIOS post screen/no video or beeps

welcome to fixya

does the computer turn on?

do any or the lights come on or is it just dead?

if compute does not turn on then you might want to make sure ever thing is plug in ...

if ever thing is pluged in and and still does not turn on this might be the power supply has gone bad ...

if computer turn on and nothing happens this could be a bad hard drive or the OS has messed up first try to but in your reboot disk this still nothing happens then the hard drive could be broken

hope this helps you out have a good day

This series of compaq laptops have an issue with current draw on the mainboard, you will need to send it to compaq for a new mainboard.

I think my compaq presario desktop has crashed

the computer is not recognizing the contents of your hard drive. you'll need a floppy with command.com, iosys.com and sysinfo.com on it. when inserted into the drive cmos looks here first. if you can access the cmos, check the search parameters to see what the computer boot up sequence is. you may want to change it to recognize the cdrom first, then the hard drive, then the A drive. I had a compaq armada that gave me the same message but I was able to reformat the drive off DOS 6.2 and changed the boot up sequence.
