Thread shred. Pfaff 463. Using 120/19 new needle. And Sunguard Anti-wick UVR bonded polyester thread for marine canvas. Why is my thread shredding?

From my past sewing experience (not an industrial machine), the thread will shred if the needle/thread/fabric are incompatible. Could be the canvas is too coarse and is wearing on the thread like sandpaper. Remember, the thread/needle will penetrate over 10 times before that section of thread actually forms a stitch, so that's a lot of friction going on. In regular sewing, a top-stitch needle has a larger scarf which acts to protect the thread, however, not sure that is a choice for your machine.

Did you slacken the screws completely there should be two off if the shaft wasn't hammered it should slide easily there is even flats on the shaft you can use a small puller too

Industrial machines are usually clutch motors. Some have speed settings right on the motor. But if you want something that works more like a home machine with a variable speed control.... You might want to locate a servo motor for it...
