82 FXRS that won't start

When I push the start button I can't hear the the relay clicking, but doesn't turn starter. I changed the battery, no help. Am I looking at replacing the starter or the solenoid or could it be something totally different?

Thanx!

I have an 82 FXRS as well. I love it even though it has a vibration that comes and goes (motor mount issue most likely.) I would check for broken/loose connection on the solenoid before I started replacing components. I'd check the switch as well. Can't really reach the solenoid to jump it direct. Check the small stuff first.

There is a start relay behind the left side panel. two allen bolts to remove. mine was just tie wrapped replacing this relay made my start button work again. I had a push button bypassing this. and found a relay looking for starter and ordered it. fixed

Why does the 30 amp circuit breaker behind the battery box on my 1990 fatboy click once when i push the ignition button? The bike won't start.

Try to reset the circuit breaker. also check for an earth fault on the starter motor .If this is not a circuit breaker and is a relay, you should make sure everything is ready for a start, (ie : in neutral, sidestand up and clutch in and that the battery is charged.) the neutral light being "on" doesn't mean it is in neutral. I hope this helps.

2002 hyundai Santa fe will not start. I turn key and starter turned for 3 seconds then stopped and now when i turn key NOTHING. I hear a circuit sound in back of car when i turn key but no other sound. ...

Definitely a starting system problem. That sound you hear in the back is the fuel pump.

Starting system circuit components (besides wiring harness)
1. Ignition Key Switch - closes the starter relay control circuit to energize the relay and close the contacts inside the relay (you can check this by locating the relay in the underhood fuse/relay box and have a friend turn the key while you listen/feel if the relay 'clicks'
2. Starter Relay or its Contacts
3. Starter Solenoid - pushes/pulls the starter gear into the engine's flywheel ring-gear and its contacts close to provide battery power to the starter itself.
4. Starter itself - poor brush contact with the armature's commutator will prevent the starter to spin/turn

If you are 'Electrically' talented, you can check to see if you're getting battery power to the starter solenoid by using a simple 12 volt test light/bulb. Connect one lead to the starter solenoid terminal and the other to chassis/engine ground and have a buddy turn the ignition key - if the light turns 'ON', then you know that particular circuit is OK but the starter solenoid is not energizing to push the starter gear into the flywheel ring-gear to turn the engine over. If it doesn't, the problem is elsewhere (wiring, starter relay, starter relay control circuit, etc).

You can have a qualified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose your vehicle. OR, you can Go to www.hmaservice.com and register your vehicle by VIN #.. you'll then have access to wiring diagrams, shop manuals, service bulletins, illustrations, etc.

you could be right about the starter relay, start with a test light and check the power at the relay. then if so check power at the switch if good make sure that the power is getting back to the relay if so replace your relay. let me know what you find and if you need help

It sounds like you have a bad starter. You can try bringing 12v direct to
the starter just to be sure(be sure it's in neutral) or use a volt meter at
the starter while somone turns the key. You have checked the wire's
and all appears to be ok, the only thing left that would draw the meter
into the red is the starter itself. I hope this helps.
