Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

I have a 1987 Dolphin Motor home. It contains a Wedgewood four burner top with oven. The oven's thermocouple-pilot switch is questionable (can't always get it to light, sometimes one hears the switching take place, but mostly it doesn't). The number on the current switch body is -87400-10 8415F. The cover/thermocouple portion is model MS C. Do you have a replacement? Richard

Pilot Light won't stay lit?

We get asked this question many times.

If you light your pilot light, hold in the button and then when you release it and the pilot light goes out, generally you need a new thermocouple. Gas repairs can only be undertaken by a qualified gas technician so you can't do this job yourself.

The thermocouple is a safety device that recognises that the pilot has a good flame and is enough to ignite the main burners. The thermocouple open that valve to the burner.

In limited circumstances the thermocouple doesn't need replacing, either the shield that aims the flame to the thermocouple has become dislodged, or the pilot jet is a little blocked by debris. Either way, having the appliance serviced by a qualified gas fitter is the way to go. I am sure you will have seen news stories about explosions caused by gas leaks and faulty appliances.

Where is a gas fuse in a Kenmore oven?

Gas ovens don't have a fuse. Won't the oven light?

Old wedgewood oven in home...very low pilot light in oven...how do I adjust it?

The oven pilot is usually located at the back of the oven; turn a screw on the pilot ignition unit to adjust the pilot flame height.

here is a link, pretty much all older ranges operate the same.

Hotpoint gas stove. burners work, oven and broiler do not.

Probably the safety valve. This unit broils and bakes off the same gas burner. A spark ignitor lights the pilot and this save gas because no standing pilot is needed. It takes a few minutes for the thermocouple bimetal combo to release the gas. When the temp gets to the desired rate then the bulb on the oven control closes off the flow of gas. To recap: The flow of gas comes from a regulator along a rail which supplys the gas to the top burners and the oven control. older models had pilot light tubing going down to the oven and to the top burners. This newer style uses a spark module to light off the top burners and the oven. So when yall turn the the oven on the spark ignitor lights the pilot first and then after the mercury bulf thermocouple heats up the bimetal inside the valve opens allowing gas to flow out to the pilot and ignite the gas burner. the temp rises and the mercury bulb oven control expands closing off the flow but not the gas safety valve. I would suspect the safety valve on this one.

The pilotlight has flame but the oven does not start(no flame ).ARW36-6

Hello Hughdrolle,
I understand that you are having a problem with you American Range ARW36-6. The problem that you are having is that the oven pilot is burning, however, the oven burners will not light. This is a common problem that is caused by the thermocouple.
I understand that you state that the pilot is running. You should check to see if the pilot's flame is heating up the thermocouple. This should be a little cooper tube/wire that runs from the gas valve down to the pilot. If the flame from the pilot is not heating the thermocouple enough the gas valve will not receive the signal to turn on and the burners will not energize.
However, if the pilot is hitting the thermocouple then you will need to replace it. Most of the time you only need a screw driver and a small wrench to remove the thermocouple. You will want to remove it from the gas valve first then from the pilot. Make sure that you turn off the gas/pilot and allow the thermocouple to cool before you try and change it. Also make sure to line up the new thermocouple as not to cross thread the thermocouple and gas valve when reinstalling.

You can pick up a replacement thermocouple from any local hardware store they are not very expensive to purchase. Pay attention to the length as they come in many different lengths to accommodate many different gas appliances.
Thank you for choosing FixYa.com if you have any further questions please post back to this thread and I will try to assist you.

One of the top burner pilot lights will not stay

You probably have grease that has gotten into the pilot. Turn off the gas to the pilot and detach the pilot tubing and pilot tip. It sometimes helps to take a propane torch and heat up the pilot tip and tubing, paying special attention to the first bend from the pilot tip. Get it red hot and tap out any ash from the inside. You may have to **** out the tubing with a piece of bare wire or blow it out with WD-40. With the oven pilot, check the pilot flame. If low, adjust. If OK, replace the thermocouple. If neither of these corrects the problem, replace the pilot satety. I always recommend a new thermocouple with a new pilot safety.

Oven burner will not ignite

try this web site for operations manual.
Sounds as if the thermocouple may be bad. It is enough to keep pilot lite but not enough to open safety valve. Some of their ovens have a "Mercury Switch" instead of a thermocouple. Look behind the kick plate. It will have a white ceramic base and have 2 wires going to it. The end sits in the pilot same as thermocouple. If there is a pilot valve, make sure that once the pilot is lit, you turn it to "on" if the position is available. Lots of options on these ovens as they custom build alot for certain companys. Check this out and let me know.

Pilot light to oven went out

It could be that the safety ($150 to $250) is getting old, or grease filled. It could also mean the thermocouple ($7 to $12) is going bad, or has a bad connection. If the copper jacket of the thermocouple is blackened near the pilot, broken or cracked in anyway, it may not be working properly, as it generates a small voltage when heated, less than100th of an AAA battery, to keep your pilot lit. If the pilot orfice is clogged with dust it produces a smaller, less hot flame, which also lowers the output of the thermocouple. If I was performing the service, you would automatically get a pilot cleaning, and a thermocouple, the safety could still be bad, and confirming this is a 50/50 chance to begin with, but it is a cheaper start. Good luck, ask more if you need too, thank you, an Happy New Year.

Gas oven dosnt work

the pilot light is there for 2 purposes. number 1 to light the burner and number 2 to heat up the thermocouple, thermocouple is a wire that the flame from pilot suppose to surround by fire. if the pilot is to low it will not reach the thermocouple. you can take the gas line that supplies gas to the pilot and clean it with a safety pin or a small needle. you can test the thermocouple by heating it up with a blow torch on low heat, get it red hot and then turned on the oven. if the oven works clean the pilot, if the oven do not work, replace the thermocouple if separate from safety valve. if thermocouple is part of it replace the safety valve.
