Gateway Notebook MX3231 I purchased 1gb ram and the laptop wouldn't boot up. A tech informed me that gateway only recognizes certain ram. I went to the website and purchased the recommended pc4200 ram. Now the laptop boots up, but only recognizes 512m instead of 1g.

Thank you for getting me started on this! Ok, I did what you said and under Approx. Total Memory, it says n/a.

    ???

  • Ronda Nogales Jul 29, 2009

Ok, so I went into bios upon restarting and there doesn't seem to be a selection for shared memory. Is there a work around or am I simply in the wrong place?

  • Ronda Nogales Jul 29, 2009

hello again. ok, after poking around at my graphics acceleration, I didn't have it set very high. now I do and when I run dxdiag, it says approx. memory is at 64 mb, which I was able only to change in BIOS to either 32 or 16mb.
Could it be any other problem?

I'm still looking for help on this. I need this extra RAM to run software for my job, so anything would be helpful.

    Thanks

Hi,
It sounds like the machine is taking 512MB of memory for the graphics.
To check this in Vista click on the orb and in the search box type dxdiag and hit the enter key.
In XP click on the start menu and in the run box type dxdiag and hit enter.
A little box will pop up, just click on yes and the dirextX diagnostic tool will pop up, click on the display tab and look down the page for "approx total memory"
If it says 512 MB then the system is pinching half of your system memory, to lower it you have to restart the laptop and go into the BIOS and lower the shared memory to what you will feel comfortable with.

Please post back if you need anymore help.

Good luck.

It should show the size of the graphics card in dxdiag, you will now have to go into your BIOS and check in there, look for shared memory and see if you can lower it to 128/256 MB.

    Good luck.

I put a 2gb ddr2-667 memory chip in the single (only) memory slot in my gateway nx100x notebook pc. The pc will not boot up with the 2gb memory card. Is there a compatibility problem or do I have a ba

yes, there may be compatibility problem. your 2GB ram may be dead. try your 2gb ram on other notebooks. if it is working on other notebooks, then your ram is ok. your notebook will support maximum 2GB ddr2 memory per slot. your notebook may not be booting due to unsupported frequency of your ram. maximum supported frequency for your notebook may me 400Mhz, and you are putting a 667MHz ram into it. try to put a 400MHz 2GB ddr2 ram in your notebook.

What is the difference between mx3231 mx3228?

The screens are probably interchangeable. The two laptops have the same size screens, 14-inch Widescreen Ultrabright WXGA TFT. The major difference between them is that the MX3231 has a CD writer/DVD-ROM optical drive. The MX3228 has a dual-layer DVD writer. See https://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/MagicLC/1009130sp2.shtml and http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/MagicLC/1008831sp2.shtml for the specs of both of these Gateway notebooks.

I hope this helps.

I want to know if I can upgrade the harddrive and memory

Depending on the memory you already have you can install upto a maximum of 1GB 266MHZ DDR, and cannot see any reason for not being able to upgrade your hardrive for a bigger one, but be aware that the Operating system backup will probably be on a seperate partition on your current hardrive, unless you got an installation cd with your laptop.
