DVDs with pictures refuse to play. Get 'format unsupported'

I have a set of DVDs with pictures which do not play.  I keep getting 'format unsupported'.  They used to play in my older dvd player.  It is not a problem with 'dirty' DVDs because I just burned a brand new one again.  What else can I try?

I have the Bose 3 2 1 GSX system and have recently had the same problem. DVDs that have been playing on the system for a year, now get either of these two error messages: "format unsupported" or "cannot read disc". Funny thing the Bose setup disc plays fine. And since this happened on a holiday weekend I have to wait to call Bose on the next business day. They need to have 24/7 tech support for their customers

My 2 1/2 year old LG dvd/vcr recorder will play some dvds but will not play others. It says unknown disc. I was told to try a lens cleaner; I bought one and the lens cleaner says unknown disc as well. ...

Your DVD /VCR says unknown disc because the
dvd which you have inserted is not of the supported format by player.

If you insert unsupported formats only it will say as unknown disc. This is not related with disc cleaners.

Please insert the supported formats and it will play the disc.

Hello there.

Push "Play/Pause" and "DVD Rec" on the dvd recorder a few seconds to see the service menu. There you can find your firmware version.

Post back the version for us.

Hope this helps.

Bose lifestyle 48 says format unsupported for audio cds

Hi Johnxxlt,
According to Bose, the message that you have is due to dust in the system ....
They have offered 3 ways :-
Try cleaning the CD or DVD, as follows:

  • Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove stains or fingerprints from the disc surface

  • Wipe in straight movements from the center of the disc to the outside

  • Do not use any chemical cleaning products. They can damage the disc.
If the above will not fix the problem, you need to call them to repair the system.
I know its frustrating, However, we cannot play more with Bose as it might void the warranty if any.
Thanks for using Fixya.
Do rate the solution as "Fixya" if 100% satisfied.

Format unsupported

Format unsupported simply means the unit can not read the disc. The problem is either the disc or the player.

Contact Bose technical support if you are sure the discs are good. 800-367-4008
