Question about GE GSS25JFM Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

My freezer was developing frost / not cooling very good.

I have a GE model # gss25jfmc ww. My freezer was developing frost on the inside back wall of the freezer and the refrigerator side just wasn’t cooling very good. I read a bit on forums and I believe it may be similar to maytag317 who posted last on July 15 2009. He said it could be the heater and defrost thermostat or the motherboard. Last I saw he was giving the heater and defrost thermostat a few weeks to see the results.

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck! P.s Please don't forget to rate my solution Thanks! and thanks for using Fixya. Mike

GE Model TPH 21 PRSM WW does not turn offf

Many things that could cause the problem First if you just plugged it or have little in it, it will run for a long time. Next check if if it is cooling properly place a thermometer in a liquid it the refrigerator compartment it should read around 42 degrees. If it is warm in the refrigerator compartment Look at the freezer back wall for frost buildup If you have frost on the back wall, you will need to defrost it and repair the defrost circuit. This is a. Common problem on GE models If the temperature is good in the fresh food compartment you will probably need to replace the thermostat or cold control

Hi, my GE refrigerator has ice developing on the rear wall of the freezer, and things in my crisper drawer are freezing solid, please help!!!!

Unplug refrig. Empty all food from freezer side and remove shelves from freezer. Remove back metal cover from inside freezer. Melt frost with a hair blower. Examine defrost heater at very bottom of the coils you defrosted. If heater coil inside glass tube is broken, replace defrost heater. (note: replacement may look different, but insturctions included with replacement address that) If heater is not broken, replace the small white pencil shapped sensor at the top of the cooling coils.

Have a GE side by side gsh22sgress unit. Child left freezer door open. Unit ran for days (in non-occupied appartment). Meat thawed. Cleaned unit inside with mild soapy mix. Unit runs but will not cool...

Open door let too much moisture into refrigerator. (The cooling coils, behind the back wall of the freezer compartment, are blocked with frost) If you unplug the refrig for a day or so it will work again, or you can take the back wall out from inside the freezer and melt the frost with a hair blower.

My ge side by side model gss25jfmc ww will start to freeze food in the cool side then it stops cooling in the freezer side. Ice will form on the back wall of the freezer. I haved thawed it out &...

I can tell you how to find the problem , but , it is a little work .
Pull the refrig out and remove the 8 " x 10 " panel . Behind this panel , is the main control board . Unplug the refrig . Remove the BLUE plug from the board , with 3 larger wires going to it . Looking at the blue plug , the sequence will be wire1,wire2,space,wire3 . Get a short piece of insulated wire , and strip about 1/4 inch from each end . Insert 1 end into wire2 , and the other into wire3 . Plug the refrig back in . After about 3 min , look in the freezer , at the bottom , behind the crisper , look for a red glow . If no red glow , unplug the refrig , and reassemble the plug and cover . This no glow , indicates a shorted defrost heater WR51X10055 . It is also advisable to replace the defrost thermostat ( pt. number WR50X10068 ) when replacing the heater . To access these parts , you will have to remove the inside rear wall of the freezer . The heater , is at the bottom of the coils , held on with 2 screws , and the thermostat , is the 1 " cylinder , with a blue and pink wire going to it , clipped on the top left of the coils .
If you do get a red glow , then the # 4 thermistor is bad . This tells the main control board , the temp of the coils , if they need defrosted , when they are thru defrosting . This thermistor is the 1 " long , torpedo looking piece , clipped on the top left of the coils , with 2 white wires going to it . Part number WR55X10025 . It would be advisable to also replace the # 5 thermistor , located at the bottom of the freezer , slightly in front of the drain , also with 2 white wires going to it , slid into a housing . This thermistor , is the freezer thermistor , which tells the control board , the freezer temp , and , when to cycle off due to temp satisfied .

GE refrigerator model PSS27MGMBB Freezer is not working

Open the freezer door and look at the back wall. If there is frost on the back wall, you have a defrost problem, which means air cannot circulate over the cooling coils located behind the freezers back wall. You will have to remove the back wall and melt all the frost with a hair blower, then replace the defrost heater. (part number WR51X10055) . This is assuming that the fan by the compressor and the one inside the freezer are working.
