You might try cleaning the contacts with some fine 400 grit sandpaper or other contact cleaner. I have a 2 year old 680, and I cut a piece of this sandpaper to the same size as the sim card. I pushed it into the slot, and ran it in and out for half a minute. I also sanded the contacts on the sim. Not too much, mind you, but it cured my problem. Good luck...
I would strongly suggest not pushing sand paper into the SIM card slot. The circuits inside are (as with any small device) very delicate. If you so much as scratch a board trace or get fine bits of sand inside, you can end the phone's life very quickly. There is a sliding SIM tray for the card on this phone that blocks the internal contacts and should not be removed.
Clean the SIM card contacts with isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth or q-tip. Also, make sure the card is seated correctly in the SIM tray (contacts facing down). If the card is clean and seated fully in the SIM tray and you still cannot get the card to read, then you have 2 final options. 1) have your cellular provider issue you a new SIM card and try that. 2) there is a hardware 'read' issue with the device (which has happened before for users).
