My magellan roadmate 1212 will not stay on unless plugged into

Please try to charge your unit using both the AC adapter and the Cigarette Lighter Adapter. If only one fails to work then that accessory needs to be replaced

if its not charging the battery, the meter will say full even though the battery is dead..its a very common problem with alot of gps with the usb as a charging port. my solution is if this is still under warranty, i would send it back to magellan or where ever you bought it, because sooner or later the usb port is going to totally fail and wont even start up if plugged in and your going to be left with an expensive paper weight.
