Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W5 Digital Camera

Shuts right off - now lens won't go in

My camera will shut off after a second if it's on any setting other than view. So I know it's not the battery b/c I can view photos on the screen just fine, but when I try to change to any other setting to take a photo or video, it shuts right off. Looked at the manual and tried to initialize (from the view setting since won't stay on long enough to do it from any other setting), i went to 'initialize' and pressed 'okay' and then the lens came out about half way and then the camera shut off. I'm somewhat relieved b/c before, the lens wouldn't even come out - so at least it's possible. But now when I try to turn it on, the lens moves at little out and in for a second and then camera shuts off again.

Re: shuts right off - now lens won't go in

I was having the same problem and tried several set of new batteries. Finally I purchased a set of high performance lithium batteries and the camera works on them. Before trying to get repairs or buying a new camera try spending $15 on the best batteries you can find.

Camera lens won't shut

This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canons), "ACCESS" error (Sony), "Zoom Error" (Fuji), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (nearly all camera makers lately use this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move.

I turn camera on. Lens comes out. beep 3 times. turns off.

Everytime I try to turn it on, the lens comes out for about a second, the camera beeps 3 times, the lens retracts and the camera shuts off. The battery is completely charged and the camera is only 4 months old. HELPP :(

Camera won't turn on - makes strange sound

This is a very common issue with digital camera on either the lens gears have to be replaced or the lens barrel need replacing. I rebuild these lenses all the time for 75.00 plus shipping and the turn around is normally less then a week. if you still need help fell free to contact me at

It just shut off....

it normally indicates a problem with the batteries. Try inserting disposable alkaline battieres in the camera and turn it on.

If the lense is still out at the moment try pressing the play button the back of the camera to view the pictures taken, even with a very low battery this normally close the lense properly and enables you to view the pictures.

Vivicam 8400

I have a ViviCam 8400 and have the same problem UNLESS I buy Duracell Power Pix or Energizer Titanium batteries. These cost more than the regular grade AA batteries, but when I used brand new regular batteries, the camera would turn on for 2 seconds then turn right off. Titanium or Power Pix batteries make the camera work fine. And, because they are made for digital media, they do allow you to use the camera for longer periods of time.

When turned on, lens goes out then right back in, eventually camera shuts off. view mode OK.

This might be an E18 lens error issue. Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. Have already fixed several cameras with this problem by using these methods:
