Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Hi! I have a Rock Mobile External 250gb hard drive that I have reformatted for my MacBook Pro computer. I have used it for about 6 months now. One day I noticed when I turn on the power it took longer and longer to hear the hard drive motor power up to speed. After a month of so I turn it on and no high speed motor sound. I still hear a slow motor spinning sound. My computer doesn't recognize the drive or even see it. Green power light is on. This doesn't sound like a HD motor failure. Could this be a logic board controller issue? I still hear a motor running slow every time I turn it on. No other strange noises.

I tried to use a diagnostic software but the hard drive can't be seen by the computer so the diagnostic software can't be useful through the computer connection. I think the diagnostic will need to be hard wired direct somehow. The sound I hear is like something moving at a very slow standby speed. That sound doesn't change at all. I have tried to disconnect the USB and reconnect but that doesn't seem to help trigger anything. I'm pretty knowledgeable with electronics, just don't know this hard drive which appears to be made by Western Digital. I was hoping that it might be some loose connection but everything is tight. The failure mode was gradual over a period of several weeks until it failed completely. Hope this helps.

Its in your logic board controller issue, usually the problem is like that but to see what is the another problem of your External Drive is to make or use any diagnostic freeware program to identify the device where it really connected in your PC. I have also encountered like your problem but I send my External to Electronic Tech to check the power connection and controller connection going to PC. Because you said that the hard Drive is still have a normal sound then it is working then but cannot see in your Computer. Try to Diagnose first before you bring to a Technician. Good luck!

If not being detected to any diagnostic program then bring it to them and ask them what would you do about your External Drive...

My Toshiba 250gb external hard drive model hddr250e03x is not recognized by my macbook pro but the light turns on. It works on my friend's macbook pro but not mine

I'm assuming you mean it doesn't appear in Finder. Open up disk utility and it should appear there if you say the MacBook is providing power to the hard drive light. You may have to reformat or reset your Mac if you want it in finder

SimpleTech 250 gig external drive not recognized on MacBook

It could be formatted in a different manner. See if it is detected by your mac. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and see if your hard drive is shown there. If it is, then the formatting of your hard drive is not compatible and you will need to reformat to be able to use it on a mac.

I bought a StoreJet 25M 640 external hard drive. When i try to use it with my MacBook Pro I am told I have to reformat the HDD. Is this right? How do I do this?

It is dependent on whether you are solely going to use the Hard drive with your macbook or whether you may use it on a PC as well. If you are going to use it with just the mac format it in Mac format if with PC and Mac format it for a PC.

You format the drive using disk utility which can be found by opeing up the applications folder and then the utilities folder. Open up disk utility and then on the left hand side select your hard drive, then select erase from the right. For Mac formatting under Volume Format select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" then name the drive and then click "Erase..." For PC formatting under the Volume Format select "MS-DOS (Fat)" Remember reformatting will wipe any information from the drive.

Hope this helps.

Light goes on, but is not recognized by computer

Try using another USB cable or try connecting the HD into another computer. If same problem occurred, then the problem is isolated with the HD.

We can only save the HD by reformatting it once it showed up in the Disk Utility or on the desktop. Unfortunately, there's nothing that we could do if the HD is not mounting on the screen of the MacBook and not showing in the Disk Utility.

The only hope that we could think of is once the HD is detected by another computer. Meaning that we could still reformat the HD.

But if not, then you need to get a new one. Good luck!

When I plug the Toshiba 250GB into the PC nothing happens

ok to solve this is a little complicated so first you need to click star the on your mouse right click on computer and then say manage
you should then look to the left of the window someware there you should see something that says disk manger in the categories there you should see a second drive or you might see 3 depending on if you have a recover drive. these are the drives you don't mess with c:/ or D:/ so look for your drive in the list and right click on it and say format if you have any question then comment hope this helps warning formating you drive will erase everthing on it

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

My computer doesen't recognize the hard drive

you need to partition the drive in the first instance before it will do anything, ( as they are not initially partitioned) you need to go into logical drive management to partition the drive. (right click on my computer, select Manage then when the mangement screen comes up select logical drive manager, you should then be able to see your unpartitioned drive which you should then be able to partition and format)
